I didn't care for the Appalachian Trail book, but I do like his earlier books--particularly the ones about the English language and the one about road-tripping through small towns in the US. I think what happened with the Appalachian Trail book is that he discovered that the "I'm a stupid schmuck" shtick appeals to a lot of people. I am not one of those people.
