I read Jewett in college and loved it enough to give it to my sister. I remember it being very atmospheric, about a place I still haven't visited.

OOH. I have added to my wishlist. Have you read Into the Breach: American Women Overseas in World War I by Dorothy Schneider? Also very excellent.
