I like the way you phrase that, because even a reader like me will intuit the import, even if she hadn't known what it was.

I try to be pretty careful about not assuming that people either will or will not have the hockey background, just as I try not to assume that they will or will not know the ballad etc. There are times and places for assuming audience knowledge, but I just don't feel that this is one.
