So next week I'll be going in for an MRI on my head to verify that I don't have a brain tumor. I say "verify" rather than "determine," because the odds are extremely good that I do not have a brain tumor. Still, the doctor and I jointly determined that it was a good idea to make sure under the circumstances.

(It is not an accident that I have not told you the circumstances. If I feel like sharing those details at a later date, I will do so; until then, rest assured that they are in the category of "weird and/or annoying" rather than "severe, painful, and alarming." Condolences are not necessary. I am not drastically ill. We're just making sure. I am not losing sleep over this one. Good thing, too: I need sleep.)

Along with all of this, I have very little energy, so if you show up at my birthday party Saturday night and no one dusted the end tables, please cope quietly with this lack or else take your napkin to them surreptitiously if it makes you feel better. I will be very glad to see people who can make it -- and again, locals, please let me know if you're coming so I can throw another metric ton of food and beverage out in your honor -- but I have decided that the perfect party is for some other year, and this year we will have the party we can have. And enjoy it, I expect.

ETA: My doctor reminds me of [livejournal.com profile] matociquala. You might find this disturbing, but it's actually rather comforting.

I hope the party is excellent, and the MRI results safely uninteresting.

Even though I know better, my brain insists on translating that as your doctor reminds you of a large upright grizzly bear (http://www.bronxzoo.com/media/image/GrizzlyBearStandingWebJMaher.JPG).

I suspect I need sleep too.

That kind of thing (testing for a serious illness, I mean) is always scary, no matter how unlikely. I hope the party is wonderful, the time until the MRI and then until the results get to you passes quickly, and that said results are, as [livejournal.com profile] truepenny said, safely uninteresting. On second thought, just safe; I suspect getting to see your own brain could be extremely interesting. I just hope it's extremely interesting and entirely routine, both.

I hope the party is fantastic, I had a blast at the last one.

I will not be available though - leaving town Sunday morning for a week of camping, with all the resultant packing and prep and "Gah! Must catch up computer!" that that involves.

Thanks for the invite, but we'll be up at my parents' cabin this weekend.

Oh, duh. Also fried, if you can't tell.

I also obviously hope the MRI is entirely boring. My husband's was, when he had one done after a freak seizure a few years ago. (We both did, however, find the technology very intriguing,.)

Pat the puppy, enjoy your party, love your guys. When the party's over, leave the mess and go outside to look at the stars.

Enjoy the party.

Good thoughts about the medical testing.

I won't be at this party; I'll be having a strenuous week on Friday.

Of my own experience, ask (or have your dr. ask) if the radiologist who reads the MRI can give your dr. a "wet read" right away. That'll get you an answer days ahead of waiting for a formal report with dictation and transcription.

Date: 2005-07-29 01:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] porphyrin.livejournal.com
Oh!

Yes.

You can ask the radiology tech to make a copy of the pictures for you-- either to print them out as film or to transfer them electronically to disk.

It's your head. If you want pictures of the inside of it for your very own, and they're doing the MRI *anyway*...

I'm sure you're medically fine*.

And I'm sure you'll have fun at your party*.

And I'm sure your endtables aren't that dusty.

*This does not, however, preclude my desire for updates as the rest of the districts report in.

I hope you're back to 100% soon. Did you get that Mrissa shipment I ordered for you? I hope it's not back-ordered. And a belated happy birthday to you, you old lady.

PS My mom's MRI results have always come back within 24 hours. I hope you get yours at least that quick.

They are, alas, high-end wooden TV trays and/or computer desks.

But we know which end tables we're ordering, so that's something, at least.

Didn't they send you one of those charming Amazon delay notices? The ones that say, "Oh, no, we're sorry; we said it'd ship within 24 hours but actually it'll ship by April at the absolute latest"?

I'm pretty sure we got mine back within a couple days, for those who are wondering. (I have the ursine doctor as well.)

I believe so.

Also your computer is making funny noises, so if you don't come in here pretty soon and it doesn't stop, I'll come find you.

It stopped.

Date: 2005-07-29 02:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ellameena.livejournal.com
Well, shoot. Isn't that always the way? Let's hope your imaging lab doesn't use Amazon for delivering test results, eh?

It's good that your doc is being extra cautious. I hope they are also working on finding out what's really causing your symptoms, as well as ruling out the exotic and scary.

Date: 2005-07-29 02:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
Yes, there are some tests being run even as I type for the mundane and the easily-fixed. Although it's not a long list, frankly.

Date: 2005-07-29 02:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ellameena.livejournal.com
Oh, yeah. Mundane and easily-fixed. Frankly, that's what I think it is. My sister had Mundand and Easily-fixed last year. She was totally exhausted for a couple of weeks, no energy, poor appetite, and she was completely unable to dust coffee tables. I tell you, every time she went near them with a dust rag, her hand cramped up, and she would faint dead away. Well, it turns out she went to the doctor and tested positive for MaE-F. The doc sent her home with a scrip and the next morning she ran a 5k race, cooked a 5 course meal, and then climbed up on her roof to clean the gutters. :-) :-)

Wow. Are you actually communicating with someone in your own house via the internet???

PS If the computer is making noises STOP EVERYTHING and back up your entire hard drive. It may be about to die, even if the noises go away temporarily. I have this advice on the best authority--which is not my own.

Date: 2005-07-29 02:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
Indeed we were, and I have certain information that we are not the only ones on the friendslist who do so.

[livejournal.com profile] timprov has turned it off, but from the quality of noise, it appears to be the fan rather than the hard drive. And I assume all backups are being performed properly etc.

Date: 2005-07-29 02:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
Well, I have no intentions of cleaning your sister's gutters even if I get The Good Drugs, but it's a heartening story, at least.

Poodle puppies have the lovely property of picking up more crud than they deposit, so we mostly need to mop, not so much sweep first. Poor little beast--she's had more monkey hair shed on her than we've had puppy hair shed on us!

Mopping works too. Something about swirling and sweeping motions in housework also tends to generate lots of story ideas, so I'd be killing two birds with one stone. :)
