Well-loved

Last night [livejournal.com profile] porphyrin and Mike and Roo brought me a lasagna and garlic bread and ate it with me. Today [livejournal.com profile] dd_b brought me the last two O'Brian books to borrow (and an afternoon of low-key time with himself on the couch with the doglet). Mostly when people use the word "well-loved," they mean it as a euphemism for "battered," or else they mean that lots of people like them. But right now I'm feeling like the people who love me do a damn good job of it. I don't even know how I ended up with such great people to love. It's a good thing we don't all get what we deserve, or I wouldn't have even a quarter of what I do.

For even more local values of "people who love me" than those, I have promised [livejournal.com profile] timprov that I will drink some Gatorade to help stay hydrated and all that, as a way to address his concerns concretely, since they are reasonable and motivated by taking care of me. And Lord a'mercy, gracious sakes alive, jiminy pete, and any other old-fashioned oath you can come up with: that stuff is vile. As my great-aunt says about the cheap red wine of her time, it is not at all nice. I keep telling people I've had gator before, and it was a lot better than that, even accounting for it being powdered and reconstituted into a beverage. I think that Gatorade keeps you from getting dehydrated in the following way: you drink one small mug of Gatorade, and then you drink two large glasses of water to get the taste out of your mouth. Thankfully, I did not promise [livejournal.com profile] timprov that I would not complain while drinking this wretched stuff.

[livejournal.com profile] markgritter wiped off the trash can lid. This is not "news flash" material. This is in the category of "people loving me well": having a clean trash can lid makes me feel so much better. Really. It's one of those little things that matters way out of proportion. We all have those, and that's one of mine. Also, he is taking [livejournal.com profile] missista out to play, grinning sheepishly. And that's pretty cute.

What little things make you feel loved?

Frankly, I'm not feeling particularly well-loved at the moment. (Not Rudder's fault. Other people.)

But I can offer Gatorade advice. We go through a lot of it in these parts, being the only household I know who buys the stuff in three forms (large bottle for drinking in-house, small for taking with, powdered for mixing in). First, it comes in a gazillion flavors. None of them is exactly fine wine, but you might dislike some less than others. Second, a rowing coach of my acquaintance recommends drinking it only in diluted form. One of her reasons is that it's so sweet you can end up getting a sugar high, then crashing shortly afterward. And in your current state that might be all too literal. Last time I was feeling dehydrated, I took her advice: I got a 32-ounce bottle of Gatorade (blue, which I prefer), a water bottle, and a cup. I mixed the Gatorade and water about half and half in the cup and ended up consuming all of it in the course of an afternoon. It seemed to work fairly well.

Another way to do that is to get the powdered version and mix however much you want into a water bottle. Less choice this way: I've only seen orange, red, and lemon-lime. The lemon is too acidic for me, the red might be the same as what you're drinking now, and the orange tastes exactly like Tang (it's actually better at half or quarter-strength). Hope this all helps.

I could have had Tang instead of this? Meep!

I'm running about 8 oz of Gatorade to 12-16 oz of water, but not mixed together, separately. So far.

Our experience with Gatorade is that if you need it, it tastes wonderful. And if you don't, it tastes horrible!

I have found that (at home) I drink more water if it's pre-portioned - I re-fill 8-12 oz. water bottles, and then will drink an appropriate number of them each day.

Little things that make me feel loved:

Last night hubby talked me into leaving the dishes and coming downstairs. He and MFD both tried to take the dishes from me. hehe

Spud running at me yelling "Mom-Mom", throwing himself at me, and hugging me.(ok..so this is a big thing)

The girls cleaning their rooms when I have not asked.

Getting to sleep in. =)

Around here, we hold to the theory that the better Gatorade (or Pedialyte) tastes, the more you needed it.

Unfortunately, Gatorade has salts in it that Tang does not. The flavor can be improved by mixing with fizzy water (if you like fizzy stuff), by adding a little lemon juice (if you don't like very sweet drinks) or by drinking it very cold.

Holding me and reading to me does interesting things to my sense of being loved. Terminal C at the Boston airport has big rocking chairs, and my sweetie will sit in one with me and read to me before going through security, keeping my feet off the floor, taking care of me as much as possible before leaving me to take care of myself.

That's also an SCA axiom: "If the Gatorade tastes sweet, keep drinking until it doesn't."

I suppose I'd get branded some sort of wierdo if I admitted that I actually like the taste of Gatorade and will often choose to drink it?

I didn't mean actual Tang, I meant the kind that tastes like Tang. I have the fountain lemonade kind of Gatorade and would prefer the Tang kind of Gatorade.

I hate fizzy stuff. Will not drink soda if there's any other option including an elderly water fountain. But the others are good suggestions for me, and I will try to keep it chilled.

Big rocking chairs at the airport sounds incredibly humane.

[livejournal.com profile] markgritter and I were not out at the same time today, but [livejournal.com profile] dd_b did take me away for lunch, so you may have seen us.

Unfortunately, I think the signs are pretty clear that I've been dehydrated, so it doesn't necessarily follow that if it tastes bad, you're fine and don't need to drink it.

You will get branded the kind of weirdo who gets bequeathed our extra bottle of Gatorade if I feel better soon enough not to open it. That is the kind of weirdo you will be branded.

I think I could like with that. :-)

It looks like it would also brand me the kind of weirdo who can never remember how to spell "weirdo." ;-)

It is not an unreasonable oops, I'm afraid, especially from a distance.

"i before e...," except for weird, which is just weird.

I do try not to correct people's spelling, though. Even when they offer me "congradulations," and I want to point out that we have the abbreviation "congrats" to remind them of how it's spelled...but the sentiment is more important coming from friends, so I keep my mouth shut.
