Who sent me the Earth and Mars?

They are extremely cool, and I am very pleased. (They are glass marbles.) But there was nothing incriminating in the box, and it appeared to ship from the company in question. And I sincerely doubt that it was anybody not on this friendslist. So who gets my thanks?

Oh, my gosh! I saw those in the catalog in question. Someone really loves you... May I suggest you put people at the top of your suspect list who have steady jobs?

I think this must be a different catalog! The shipping company from the mailing label prices them at a couple of bucks apiece, though they are way out of proportion for that in coolness.

Oh, neat. I saw some of those in a catalog, but they were around $100/apiece. Actually, though, I think they were more paperweight sized than marble sized. What a neat gift!

This reminds me of that scene in Komarr when Miles buys planets for everyone.

Yes, these are definitely marbles, not paperweights. And at a few bucks apiece (search Amazon on "Earth marble" or "Mars marble," I think), definitely worth it for token gifts.

Of course, I want the Jovian moons now.

I hope not! If someone sends me Mars via celestial mechanics, more than the Greater Twin Cities Metro Area will be inconvenienced.

Nono... celestial mechanics. As in, guys who fix planets for a living. Maybe they had some spares.

That's exactly the scene I thought of as well. Thanks for the idea, I should get some for my wife. I did the "name a star" thing for her a few years ago, it seems only just that she gets some planets to go with it.
