Free books! Usual rules apply: first person to request the book gets it within a two-tiered system: Minneapolitans or people visiting the area soon get first dibs, then the rest of you-all within North America. I'm willing to send books abroad for a few of you, but mostly I want it to be something special and important, not just a whim, if I'm going to pay overseas postage.

Some of these are duplicates, some are things I disliked, and some are just things I didn't love enough to keep on the shelves. The bar is much, much higher for me to keep mysteries on the shelves than spec fic of any variety.

Oh, and if you want a whole series, I prefer to keep the sets together if possible, so that I'm not trying to give away book 3 in a series. So if you want to try one, try both or all three or whatever, and then you can pass them on as a group if you decide you don't want them either.

Oh, and if you want to know what something is beyond the brief tags, ask, and I will do my best to answer.

Kevin J. Anderson, Hidden Empire
(claimed)Stephanie Barron, Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor and Jane and the Man of the Cloth and Jane and the Wandering Eye -- this is a mystery series with Jane Austen as the detective
Saul Bellow, Henderson the Rain King -- it turns out this is not much like the song the Counting Crows wrote after reading it, go figure
(claimed) Aimee Bender, Willful Creatures -- short stories
(claimed) Gregory Benford, The Martian Race
(claimed) Francesca Lia Block, Dangerous Angels -- an omnibus of Weetzie Bat books
(locally claimed) Ben Bova, Death Dream, Empire Builders, The Kinsman Saga, Moonrise and Moonwar, Peacekeepers, Privateers, Return to Mars
(locally claimed) Orson Scott Card, Homecoming: Harmony, Earthborn, and Earthfall -- the first of these is an omnibus of the first three books in that series, so it's three volumes, all five books of the series
(claimed) Hal Duncan, Vellum
(locally claimed) Ed Gorman (editor), The Black Lizard Anthology of Crime Fiction
(claimed)Mark Helprin, Winter's Tale
(locally claimed)Nancy Holder and Nancy Kilpatrick (editors), Outsiders
Patricia Kennealy-Morrison, The Deer's Cry
(locally claimed) Ian Rankin, The Black Book and Mortal Causes (omnibus) -- mysteries
Marjane Satrapi, Embroideries -- graphic novel
(claimed)Maria V. Snyder, Poison Study
(locally claimed) Roger Zelazny and Robert Sheckley, Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming
(claimed)Zoran Zivkovic, The Fourth Circle

Ooh, looks like a good batch, although I've already read the ones that especially interest me. But hey, if you have any left over after the blog world has claimed the books that interest them, you might check out the book donations program we're working on at KU:

If no one in your area wants them, then I would be completely pleased to provide your Jane Austen mysteries with a good home.

What did you think of Vellum?

(I'm not interested in your copy, as I have one of my own.)

I read Patricia Kennealy-Morrison's first trilogy, and then I read her autobiography about her secret marriage to Jim Morrison, and now, unfairly, I laugh out loud every time I see her name. I really liked that trilogy a lot, too. In fact I wonder if I'd still like it now.

I'd like the Ian Rankins and the Ed Gorman anthology, if I could, please. :-)

I am sad to report that her totally insane website, www.lizardqueen.com, has gone where Jim Morrison went. This memory is all that remains: http://web.archive.org/web/20020604090442/http://www.lizardqueen.com/

Such a coincidence -- Henderson the Rain King is on our stack of giveaway books (which shall be listed soon) as well. [livejournal.com profile] suzimoses read it last month for a book club she's in -- a book club which seems to be having somewhat bad luck at picking books, though this was apparently notably better than the previous one.

I read parts of it, and put it down. It made rather a lot more sense when she pointed out to me that it was a parody of Hemingway.

I see the Austen mysteries and the Francesca Lia Block are already spoken for, but I owuld be interested in Bring me the Head of Prince Charming if no one local wants them. I'd be happy to pay postage.

That first trilogy -- which I bought when I was 12 -- is why I have this book to give away in the first place. I haven't reread it in awhile. I'm afraid to. I liked it so much at the time.

But yes, the autobio stuff, the website...oof. Just oof.

From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
In the end, I just don't care enough about Hemingway to be entertained by a parody of him.

But I still like the Counting Crows.

Someone has already spoken for it, so I will say that I did not find it readable. It seemed firmly within tropes that make me roll my eyes nearly out of their sockets, so I just stopped.

[livejournal.com profile] porphyrin knows of a teen shelter that's happy to take book donations, so that's where my leftovers tend to go after the people I know have made it clear they don't want them. Hmm. Maybe I should talk to her about adding her group(s) to your list on the requests side of the ledger, though!

If no one local wants Willful Creatures, I could find it a good home over here, either with [livejournal.com profile] buymeaclue (who has my copy at the moment) or one of my other friends.

I have another Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming for readers in Europe. I don't know why I've kept it all this time; I hate it. Contact me at irina@valdyas.org if you want it; first come first served.

I reread that trilogy not too long ago. It's, um...well, I still like it, and I do love the flow of language in it, but can we say Mary Sue? :) I didn't pick up on that quite so much when I read it as a kid.

I know who you are now, so I know you're local. They're all yours. We can either arrange to get together at some point, or I can try to get one of the Dragonsept folks to take them to pass off.

Shocking, isn't it? :)

But you can't say she hogs it all to herself - everybody else gets a generous dollop of MarySueishness too, except for a few of the bad guys...

Spiffy.

Either way works for me. I have today off and then work a wonky schedule. Tue-Thurs, Sat 11am-8pm, Fri 1pm-12am.

Let me know what works for you. Or it might just be easier to bribe the Dragonsept folks.

And it'd be nice to do coffee sometime if you're up to it.
