One of my favorite novels ever is Kristin Lavransdatter. Hell, yes.

I'm all about the historical fantasy, these days.

By which I mean "oh god don't make me write another one, but I'd love to see somebody else do that work for me." <g>

Can there be a character called Ilse? PLEASE? And one called Jens?

I would buy two.

Sounds like something I'd read!

Ahh, Kristin Lavransdatter. Proving that the Norse are the only people in the world gloomy enough to make "and then she married the man she loved and went off to have children with him" a tragic ending for the first book of a trilogy.

But yes, my brain said, "Sigrid Undset meets Mika Waltari doing a Brother Cadfael novel with help from Neal Stephenson and [livejournal.com profile] 1crowdedhour."

And that was the last I heard from my brain; it's in the corner humming and rocking.

Yep, this will definitely not be the next book I write, because the research and plotting will take awhile, and I'd like to multitask if at all possible. Still....

Now let us celebrate with elaborate concoctions involving tiny spoons!

Oh, wait. We did that part.

There will be skiing and travel by sleigh and other icy death potential, but I'm afraid I can't promise you hockey without time travel, which I am determined not to have.

I am referring to two of the main characters as "Jan Valjan" and "Javert," with the latter pronounced "YAH-vert" rather than "zhah-VAIRRR."

Oh, and bits of Victor Hugo and Arnuldur Indridason.

Sigh.

Norwegian historical murder mystery, yes.
Throw in fantasy, and I sigh.

I trust you.
But I've seen so many perfectly good historical novels ruined by fantastic elements that should have influence on the historical elements, and don't; and it's a wreck.
I trust you.
But I've seen too many otherwise reasonable murder mysteries upended by fantasy elements that either should or might blow holes in the resolution. I end up reading a fantasy novel about a character who wants to find a murderer.

This is why I don't like a lot of alternate history, yes: not enough is changed.

However, this is not a murder mystery novel idea onto which I've tacked a fantasy conceit, so it's kind of all or nothing here, conceptually.
