mrissa: (don't mess with me today)

Byerly's has the eggnog and the chop-drop-and-burn cookies with reindeer designs today.

No. Just: no. Not even a little bit. No, no, and also no. With a side order of no.

Aside from that I am not particularly cranky. I've run the errands that need running and am going to have lunch, work on my book, pack, make dinner, hand out candy to marauding munchkins, and hang out with my folks, and maybe even just do not much in particular for a minute or two before I leave for World Fantasy at the dawn of crack tomorrow.

But -- reindeer cookie-like substances. No, no, no.

At least the Value Village thrift stores wait till this weekend to put out their "Merry Thriftmas" display! And I think they have legitimate reason to have a long season, as more things get donated as the season goes on, and after all, it goes to charity.

I think the eggnog is OK; we always buy it for Thanksgiving.

Walgreen's had its Christmas items out last weekend.

no, no, no.

I was out to the mall a couple of weeks back, buying a little something for Wife's birthday (Hey, little girl -- want some chocolate?) and the bastard gods of mercantile had Xmas decorations up already.

I can almost understand it from merchants. Not really, but almost.

But yesterday, there was a woman on my bus wearing Christmas socks. Also: no.

See, I have the reverse of your position on that one: the merchants are trying to squeeze every last dime out of Christmas. But maybe the lady on your bus had been really busy and had not gotten to her laundry for a really long time. Or her new puppy got in and ate half her socks. Or...y'know...something.

It has holly on it. I don't think they intend it to be Thanksgiving holly. I'm glad you can find something you want for your holiday traditions, though.

Value Village, while it does have charity alliances (http://www.valuevillage.com/alliances/alliances.php), and donates a portion of its profit to charities, is not itself a charity. It's a business. It's a business with a very responsible model, and one I support, but still a business.

I'm sure the companies save money by having only one carton design made for the whole "holiday" season, which seems a reasonable business choice.

I know. I was thinking more of the opportunities the stores themselves, at least here, give to people with disabilities. The ones here in the Twin Cities are allied with ARC, and there are often people with mental disabilities working there, one on one with a helper/trainer. People with less severe mental disabilities, as well as some people with significant physical disabilities, are hired as cashiers, too.

Ah, gotcha. As I say, a business with a very responsible business model.

Out of curiosity, what are 'chop-drop-and-burn' cookies? They sound a little ... er, carbonised ... for something that's supposed to be edible (I'm assuming they are supposed to be edible).

Halloween eggnog seems wrong (unless maybe tinted orange with a Halloween carton? (on second thought, that sounds gross), I don't really think it should show up 'til November and closer to mid-November at that, as some people do now enjoy eggnog at Thanksgiving. I think there are eggnog fans out there who are trying to stretch eggnog season and that, I can understand.

Too soon for reindeer cookies. Silly Byerlys.

It's one thing if Target wants to have some Christmas stuff out now, but the Christmas foodstuffs shouldn't be starting yet.

So all the buyer does is slice onto a cookie sheet and bake.

I don't know if the UK has the advice given to small children for "if you find yourself on fire" in the same way, but in the US we were told to, "stop, drop, and roll!" So "chop, drop, and burn" is meant to parallel that in a not-very-respectful sort of way.

You know, I can't actually remember what I was told. We definitely had some sort of fire awareness advice, including what to do if your clothes are on fire, but I think I only encountered 'stop, drop, and roll' later. Hmmm.

Thanks for explaining!
