Awwwwwww yeah. That's right.

Just a little hockey joy; the rest of you go about your business. Oh, oh: the other night when I went past Lake of the Isles, people were skating on it, and people were playing pond hockey on it. Lake of the Isles is the best lake, and I love this place so much.

Lake of the Isles is *definitely* the best lake. I always found its windiness and sheltered bits very comforting. There's something about open prairie that can make a New Englander (or at least, this New Englander) nervous...

I feel the same way when I see people playing pond hockey at night. Sheer joy at living here. A kind of future nostalgia?

Which is strange, given that I have no skating memories of my own. I just like seeing it in the wild.

Whereas it's hills that make me nervous. You never know what they're going to sneak up and do.

I've never skated outside. But this is not the year for it, for me. Sigh.

Lake of the Isles is the best lake. My great-aunt and -uncle used to live in one of the big houses that fronts onto it across the boulevard, a two- (or three-?)story antique with a furnished basement and window seats and huge trees in the front yard you could string a hammock between and then drink lemonade while reading, when you weren't canoeing with your dad.

I got two weeks of the Platonic Childhood Summer there when I was about ten. It makes me deeply sad that my cousins will probably have to sell the house in the near future, if they haven't already.

It's California* where you have to watch out for the hills moving.

*And Julie Andrews movies - those hills are alive, you know.

If for some reason they feel like selling it cheap, I would totally let you drink lemonade and canoe with your dad.

Alas, in its current state (which, I'm told, is one in dire need of repair), it's still probably worth half a million without breaking a sweat.

Their parents owned it outright, so it isn't like there's a mortgage to pay, but the property taxes are ludicrous.

Oh, lordy, yes. I've looked into that, and uff da.

Wow, the hockey strike is over? Who knew?

Minnesotans knew.

Also Canadians.

I really can't answer for the rest of your priorities.

My big recollection about the hockey strike was that, in the middle of it, Canada legalized gay marriage. Explains a lot.

(That said, Yay for Canada for doing that.)

Semi-random hockey question:

Would 6'6", 375-lb Aaron Gibson (http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/players/playerpage/133294) be able to block the entire net if he played goalie?

Height is generally a disadvantage, dunno about 375 lbs. The goal is 6' by 4'. So a 4'8" 375-pounder might have a shot, but probably not 6'6".

He's probably not 4' wide lying down, either...
