This is me not going to my grands' for the weekend as we had planned.

Tell me something good? If you're having difficulty, a good meal idea or recipe is nice.

I have fresh snow everywhere. No bare spots, no bits of grass and mud peaking through, just an unbroken blanket of soft white. The wind hasn't blown the snow off the trees, so the branches and trunks are spun-sugar frosted like a gingerbread house.

The silly cardinals don't seem to realize that spring is a ways off yet. They were sitting in the trees before dawn, singing their territory and doing their best to attract a pretty young female.

And I did see robins today, doing that little run, stop and look, run and peck at the ground thing they do. So maybe spring is coming, for robins usually mean spring.

But for today, snow!

There was some drama last night and this morning, but we seem to have worked it all out to everyone's satisfaction.

Also, we finally got a real snowstorm!

The PM lady has two people interested in my house!
I am not as overwhelmed by the move.
I have a WoW date tomorrow night!
My last day is next Thursday!!!!

Um, meal idea:
Chutney Chicken and Rice
chicken breast strips
spicy mango chutney
diced peppers
rice
chickpeas
curry-of-choice

Stir-fry chicken in sauce pan with salt, pepper, some chutney & curry to taste, set aside. Add remaining chutney & some curry to pan drippings with water, reduce into sauce thickening as desired, set aside. Make rice in saucepan, adding chickpeas and peppers towards end of cooking. Mix in some sauce, transfer to serving dish, top with chicken, serve remaining sauce on side.

What?? I'd eat that.

Tor just sent me their official ebook of Old Man's War; I may get to read it eventually! (There's a copy around the house somewhere, but I've never been able to lay hands on it when I wanted it; the ebook I can find easily.)

Chicken with cashews last night came out very well. There are even photos, which may get posted tonight. Pamela got enthusiastic buying cashews; we think this one batch has made 4 dinners heavy on cashews (three chicken&cashew, one cashew carrot curry).

Um, one day closer to baseball opener?

I am moving back to North Carolina!

I also stayed at home today, and it's been nice and quiet and warm. I cleaned out a kitchen cabinet.

For food today, I find I'm craving soup. I wish I had more stuff around with which to make it, but I may end up making a nice tomato sauce later for pasta.

Also, I make a really great curry mac - Kraft + margarine + vanilla soy milk, curry that's been toasted in a small pan in advance, and sometimes tuna. Yum.

The best soup I've had this year:

LAMB SHORBA SOUP

• medium onion, chopped
• 1 large clove garlic, chopped
• dried red pepper flakes to taste.
• 3/4 pound lamb or goat shoulder, trimmed of as much fat as possible and cut into small (1/2-inch) cubes
• 2 fresh tomatoes, skinned, seeded
• and roughly chopped
• 1 can 12 oz. garbanzo
• 2 cups water or more if you like (NOTE: lamb broth, made from leftovers of roast lamb, is wonderful, instead!)
• 1/2 cup yogurt
• 1 teaspoon cumin
• 1/2 teaspoon dry mint
• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1 cardamom
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• few sprigs saffron

Directions
1. Heat the oil in a pot and fry the onions for a few seconds.
2. Add the crushed garlic, chili flakes and lamb. Fry again for a few seconds. Add spices and sauté for few more moments.
3. Add all ingredients except the yogurt. Simmer till the lamb is very well done and has absorbed all the flavors.
4. before serving bring the heat to low add yogurt and serve hot.

I had lunch with another person involved with the Emergent-Lutheran group, and we spent most of the time cursing about bishops and celebrating that the entirety of congregational polity can be summed up as "You're not the boss of me!" It was fun.

Picked up recently as a really marvelous breakfast: half of a ripe avocado mashed onto two slices of your favorite toast. If you have it around, a little pico de gallo or a squeeze of lime makes it even better, but this morning I just had the avocado on toasted English muffin with a glass of cran-raspberry juice. Nummy.

Amber-isms this week: "Fire but(t)!" We didn't know what this was at first, until later that morning we were passed by a firetruck with it's lights and sirens going (not uncommon for our route to daycare, past a fire station). "Fire bus!" she says more clearly. Fire bus... yeah.

Yesterday, Jeff asks "Do you like the clock, Amber?" to which she replies "Yes. It's clocking"

We had an amusing moment last night.. we heard odd animal-like noises from the corner of the bedroom but could not find any animals (specifically the cat), and after trying to ignore the noises and imaginings that there were mice in the walls chewing on things, I got out of bed and discovered that our cat had completely buried herself under a very heavy comforter and was "digging" out a cave of kittenly warmth. It was very cute. And less cute for the retelling, but I'm guessing that as an owner of an animal you would understand the cuteness of finding animals in unexpected comfy places.

My mouse tail plant (http://www.paghat.com/mouseplant.html) is coming up again, ten years after I ordered it hoping it would be hardy enough to survive the cool northern California climate. The shiny green arrowhead leaves are a joy to see, and in a month or six weeks it will make mouse tails!

I am also very pleased with my rewrite of a short story. I have been learning the art of rewriting, which makes me stamp my feet metaphorically and declare "I won't!" a lot.

I'm not at work; instead I am home playing with many, many beads and watching old X-Files episodes. That's a very good thing, as far as I'm concerned.

And there will be actual baseball games in a week or so, even if they don't count yet.

My baby is going for his advanced orange belt tonight. I just had lunch with my gay. I spent all morning at the school helping with the kiddos and it was Disney Day so I took cool stuff to share with people who had forgotten.

I hope that something will happen to produce for you the utter satisfaction that I feel in my day.

The OpenID Beast has fallen before the might of my geekiness.

That's more of a good thing for me than for you, so here's a meal idea. :)

Roasted game hens with some nice aromatics built around lemons, whatever your favorite kind of mashed potatoes are, asparagus, white wine, and sorbet.

I made tofu and broccoli with peanut sauce last night. It wasn't the best I've made, but it was good.

Every time I take a nap, my cat curls himself right under my chin and purrs thunderously.

The little woodpeckers in our neighborhood are doing their spring drumming. It's sometimes a little hard to tell this apart from the spring rattle of the crows.

For food: Cold blend of ice, green tea leaves and milk from Peet's Coffee called a green tea freddo.

For general pleasure: My dog has abilities of compaction which would do a cat credit. He can tuck in his forepaws and hindpaws and curl just so to occupy a very small space indeed. Then I can uncoil him like a potato bug by scratching his back. He unfurls, slowly, and then rolls onto his back, shows me his belly, and stretches out forepaws and hindpaws as far as they will stretch. It is cute incarnate.

In descending order of importance, three good things.

My cousin is back in the US and no longer in Fallujah.

I had a really good Boskone, which I should probably post about.

My copy of Race for the Galaxy is getting lots of play, so much so that I bought card protectors so it'll last longer.
