Ways In Which The Guthrie Is a Good Place for Concerts for People With Vertigo: you have zero chance of getting stuck behind That Guy who will stand up during the first song and stay standing for the rest of the concert, because the seats are configured so that no one would ever do that, ever. Ever.

Ways In Which It Is Not: all other possible ways. Holy crud. Worst location for vertigo yet. Worse than the airplane in the middle of the featureless cloudbank. Really. I have my feet stuck under the bottom of my office chair so I don't fly off the top of it.

For Dar Williams? Totally worth it.

Drat. I thought that the concert was in October. Oh well, there is always next time. Glad she gave a good concert.

Dar was at the Guthire? Lucky you! (except re: all other possible ways)

It was. She has enough back repertoire that on the one hand, you're never going to hear every song you love at a single concert, but on the other hand, she could put together a dozen different really good concerts.

Well, and Shawn Mullins for an opening act was...kind of sucktastic, frankly. But one expects very little of opening acts. Otherwise it was very good indeed.

Alas I didn't make it to her local show at the Somerville Theatre, which is almost the architectural opposite of the Guthrie as far as I can tell. Built in 1914, designed by local architects, and completely lacking in bizarre cantilevering.

Shawn Mullins?! What the hell?

We are amused. Mainly because we are planning on driving four hours each way the day after returning from WFC to attend a Dar concert.

Shitty thing about the vertigo though.

Have you got her new album? It's good.

Before I can answer that, I need to know the direction of what-the-hellitude.

Not yet, but I've been repeatedly playing "Buzzer" on Youtube after hearing it a few times on XM. That song rocks.

A questioning, yet semi-respectful, where in the world did they dig up Shawn "rockabye" Mullins and why exactly is he touring with Dar?

I have the impression that Dar likes the fact that he's trying to tell stories in his songs.

I would prefer that they be good stories, and well-told, but whatever, if it makes her happy it wasn't a huge deal to sit through. [livejournal.com profile] markgritter's grimacing and clutching his head notwithstanding.

Fair enough. I do have to admit that I'm basing my entire opinion of the man's music on one hugely overplayed single that is quite possibly not representative of his overall work.

Or, simply that the one hugely overplayed song did sour me on anything he might actually perform and that given the chance, it might be worth the while. I do like the rest of Joan Osborne's album Relish, though I really can't listen to "One of Us" at all (despite being the opening theme to the also excellent Joan of Arcadia). For example.

*shrug*

In my opinion, that one overplayed single both represented his overall work accurately and looked still worse when played in the context of the rest of his work. Things like the really half-assed rhyme/rhythm scheme start looking like a big flaw instead of a quirk when it's not just one song.
