I fear that this story I'm writing is going to be emotionally structured like a movie where the hero comes out a door, an exterior door, and something by The Cure starts playing.

There are distinct disadvantages to having been a little kid in the 1980s, I'm telling you. Some parts of one's brain get written weirdly. And then when you get out of bed to get a little more story before the sleep wins, the chords in your head couldn't smell any clearer. You know that lovely Better Than Bouillon stuff, the beef kind, that really is much better than bouillon? That is what the pop end of The Cure smells like. The gothier end gets more mushrooms in it, and some ground walnut I think.

Right then. Give me fiction or give me sleep! Um. I suspect I have already indicated with my metaphors which is the wiser course.

On my good days I will sometimes find myself walking in that 80s protagonist "just starting to enter a training montage" way and get thrown off my stride by the lack of music in the background.

So, yeah, I get it.

I am sorry if your story is doing things you didn't want it to, but this entry made me ridiculously happy in the middle of the night. As did first commenter.

Now I need to find out about Better Than Bouillon, because I bet I'd like it.

Sweet dreams.

Well, I know what I'd be voting for, but I suspect you have already turned your back on your fans and gone to bed like a sensible person.

I bet you would, too. It's good stuff. It's mostly on the shelf near the bouillon, if your store carries it, but it needs refrigerating after you've opened it. I've used their beef, chicken, vegetable, and mushroom products to good effect.

I figured you might.

Clearly the solution there is to carry training montage music with you and play it during the appropriate moments. The feeling of bliss when you fall in step and the mental movie reel starts playing is totally worth the annoyance of having to stop and put headphones on in the middle of something.

I have "your soundtrack is showing" moments with some regularity, and more often than not they are 80s goth moments.

("If the song that plays in your head when you see her is In Between Days, relax; keep being a good friend and you'll get together at the end of the movie. If it's Tainted Love, start running now.")

Heh. When [livejournal.com profile] markgritter and I started dating, I had Nat King Cole's "Orange-Colored Sky" in my head for weeks. Which is so much better, as Signs And Portents go, than "Tainted Love," I can hardly tell you. Even more, it's better as songs in one's head go.

Ah, but what kind of Cure music. They are somewhat prone to mood swings. So a scene that would go with "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" would be quite different from one that would go with "Friday I'm in Love".

If it were a scene for which the structure would go with the character emerging from a building to "Love Cats", that is a story I definitely want to read.
