mrissa: (and another thing!)

I decided I was going to try watching House, because while it's entirely possible that [livejournal.com profile] alecaustin and [livejournal.com profile] skzbrust might both like something I found completely worthless, it doesn't seem like the way to bet. So I got the DVDs from the library.

I managed half an episode. That half-episode makes me think this may be my sort of thing and is worth my time (I like mysteries that are not quite on the beaten path, and medical stuff seems to fulfill that). But it also makes me think, "What kind of a freakin' moron decides to try watching a medical drama wherein people are on the verge of death a lot on the day of her uncle's memorial service, in a year where she has several seriously ill loved ones and four of them have already died?"

So it's on my Amazon wishlist for later, and tomorrow I will watch a nice, comforting, relaxing show wherein people are trying to kill each other.

One of these days I will stop being startled at how inclined towards crime shows I am. But this is not that day.

(One of these days I will also not tear up when the Marine Corps commercials come on during the ballgame because I associate them with my grandpa. This is not that day either. [livejournal.com profile] dlandon talks about the days when puppy food commercials make one cry, due to grief or hormones or both. For me it's not so much puppies, more Marines.)

Yeah, um. Perhaps not the best time.

Also, re: Crime shows - have you watched the Shield at all? It doesn't reach the heights of the Wire, but it's still quite good, and the fourth season (with Glenn Close) is outstanding.

I suspect there are things in House that will irritate you, but I agree both that you will probably like it overall, and that now is not the time to find out.

For me it's not so much puppies, more Marines.

If I were keeping an actual list of profoundly Mrissish statements (as opposed to a vague one in my head), this would go on it. :-)

Have not. Will give it a go.

With the amount I need to watch DVDs with my workouts with the stupid vertigo, I am pretty accustomed to the idea that there will be irritating things in some of them, so that's okay.

The marine commercials get to me too, really anything veteran. This is less because of my grandfather and more because every time I see one of these I think about all the kids I babysat who are now in the armed services.

I really liked your post on your Uncle Rudy, btw.

Not great timing, but we all make mistakes, and you realized this one quickly, at least.

I liked the first two seasons of "House" and then stopped watching it when they added all the new cast members. I've been told I should start watching it again.

House is good, but yeah, not the time. Crime shows are a favorite of mine, as well. Have you watched Bones?

I've watched S1, and I got S2 for my birthday. It's part of how I can tell how crime show-inclined I am: I think The West Wing is probably a better show, objectively speaking, but I was more eager to watch Bones.

I like Hodgins.

Don't we all? I have no idea why I'm so fascinated by criminal shows, but I have always been. Maybe it was the true crime novels I read with my mom when I was a teen.

This is apparently not universal: I said so to my beloved godfather, and he gave me the "different strokes for different folks" look.

I've read that people who like crime shows and mysteries are often drawn to them by the implication they (usually) contain that although things can go wrong, people can work to try and set the world back in trim* again, if they're determined and work smart about it.

It's true there is a time for certain things, and if this is not a good one, it's better to know it sooner than later, and not be too proud to admit it.

*Not "perfect"; not "just they way it was before"--just "back in trim" so that we can feel that things have been sorted, and we can move forward, more or less.

I can't speak for everyone else, but I certainly feel that way, about things being put back in trim (and I like that distinction very much). If a comedy has an off episode, it's not funny, and you have nothing much. If a drama has an off episode, it's not affecting, and you have nothing much. But if a crime show has an off episode, there's probably still a case solved at the end, and right now that counts for something with me.

You'll have to let me know how House goes for you, when it can go (later). Because I watch it fairly regularly, but it did not strike me as your type of show*.

*Which is not to say that it struck me as not your type of show.

One of the things I look for in TV shows is for smart protagonists.

The more I think about it, that may be *the* thing I look for (other than hyper-competent ambidexterity).
