All right, who installed the golf ball in my throat and the colony of ents in my chest? Hoom, hooom. They are not only deep and rumbly, they are not at all hasty about departing. Someone ought to have told this virus that it was supposed to start packing up and leaving at this point, not settling in and declaring my lungs Passchendaele. Those of you with some notions of WWI battles will now have all the metaphor you need for how I woke up, and those of you without, well, trust me, you don't want to know, because ick, ick, ick.

The really frustrating thing about all this is that my cousin and her family are visiting at my folks' house, which is ten, fifteen minutes away, but I have no indication that I'm any less contagious than I was, so I don't feel like I can in good conscience go down and see them, or, more to the point, Grandma. The last thing Grandma needs is exposure to this crud just when she's starting to feel decent again. Harumph harumph. Baroom, hoom. Bah.

I mean, at least I have Christmas books to read, but. Grump grump cough cough bleh.

So, I'm not someone who has ever been the kind to go to the doctor for something like a chest cold, but I am the kind of person who often gets a lingering chest cold following what should be a brief virus. I've recently learned that this is a pattern characteristic of a bronchitis chest infection and I probably *should* be going and getting antibiotics. I haven't had a chance to try this out, but maybe you have an infection and need some antibiotics.

I woke with a sore throat today. I've felt for weeks like I might be getting sick. I guess my body finally has permission not to put it off any longer, but I still wish I wouldn't get sick.

Yah. I have not ruled out going to the doctor at this point. I'm not going today unless something shifts drastically, but I have a couple of internal milestones that make me say, "Okay, time for the doctor." So we will be keeping a close eye on that.

I wish you wouldn't, too. I can't recommend it.

I'm so sorry you aren't feeling well, and that you are frustrated about not getting to see your family. No time is every a good time to have what it sounds like you have.

These kinds of things must need always come up on the weekend, of course, when it's not that easy to call your doctor.

Happily for me, Dr. [livejournal.com profile] porphyrin does not mind in the slightest when her close friends say, "Here is the symptom run-down; whaddaya think?" She expects that we will judge reasonably about time issues--most of the time if it's 3 a.m. and I'm thinking, "Hmm, should this go into the ER?", it should go into the ER where the people are awake already, rather than waking [livejournal.com profile] porphyrin. But basic consideration is not that hard under the circumstances.

Her friends are also extremely clear, of course, that what we're going to get out of her on the phone--or even in a social setting--is "ask your doctor about x, y, and z, and have them do test q," rather than, "here is a diagnosis, prescription, or other service."

This was extremely useful when we were figuring out whether Grandma needed the Friday night ER or whether she just needed rest. (The former. And we're sure glad she got it, too.)
