So [livejournal.com profile] timprov and I were talking about what trilogies C.J. Cherryh could write if Bren Cameron decided on a major career change. Not every field would result in this, of course, since I tend to refer to the books collectively as Er and many fields don't go Er. But there's:

Baseball media: Announcer, Interviewer, Commentator
Real estate: Inspector, Assessor, Realtor
Batman!: Joker, Riddler, Commissioner (and wouldn't the atevi be completely boggled by Batman?)

What else have you got? (Please note: Joker, Smoker, and Midnight Toker are probably not career choices.)

Since it's Thanksgiving weekend, I was thinking of the two-trilogy set Injector, Inspector, Detector, Infector, Neglector, and Selector.

Destroyer is a career choice?

Clearly I'm in the wrong industry.

Butcher, Baker, and Candlestick Maker.

Also, Piercer, Mind Flayer, and Beholder.

(After I came up with Charmander and Kingler, Uriel came up with another Er pokemon, Scyther.)

You're in the wrong industry for destroyer to be a career choice? Clearly I am confused about your industry!

Uriel has really gotten old enough to be a help around the house, I have been noticing.

Career choices in my industry are things like 'Designer' (or 'Witch Doctor', I guess, if you're making an RPG).

Though now I want to make a game loosely based on Iain Banks's Culture wherein 'Destroyer' is a career choice akin to General Systems Vehicle and Rapid Offensive Unit, and kids tell their moms they want to be Dreadnoughts when they grow up.

Meanwhile, to the point of the actual post, if we're allowed 'or' as well as 'er':

Inquirer, Examiner, Reporter, Photographer (or, if you want to take a darker route, Interrogator, Torturer, Inquisitor).

Also, Translator, Facilitator, Negotiator. Though I guess all of those *actually* describe Bren's career choices...

I think it is absolutely typical somehow that the journalism industry gets infelicitous four while forcibly extracting information from the unwilling fits fine in felicitous three.

It sounds like it would fit Atevi attitudes towards journalism to a 'T', yes. (Assuming that they have T's in Atevi.)

Opera: Tenor, Conductor, Director

Yarn-making: Shearer, Carder, Spinner

Toy soldier making: Sculptor, Caster, Painter

Flour-making: Reaper, Thresher, Miller

Will Smith: Rapper, Actor, Producer (I'm not sure that "being Will Smith" is a viable career path for most people, but it seems to pay well, and the fringe benefits can't be beat)

(Hmm. Now I'm wondering what Atevi 'counters would do with opinion polls ...)

I think they would get really worried at the inauspicious ones. "The polls are up four percent! Nooooo!"
