I seem to be (and worse as I get older) pretty much a literalist, and also to read pieces like this as attempts to persuade. These combine to flip my skepticism to high beam very early in reading, with the result that I become frustrated and unsympathetic to the writer and her point. I have the same reaction across all sorts of social-point-making; my reaction is obviously me and not a response to any writer's work.
