This is the problem of averaging on a non-normal distribution. Actually it's worse than that: it's averaging on a set of non-normal distributions. If they make clothes that sort of fit lots of women but don't actually fit anyone really well, they think they'll sell more clothes than if they fit one group really, really well. That's what the mass market is all about. You try to sell things no one hates instead of things someone likes.
