I enjoyed The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, in between quite a lot of shouting "Remind me what decade this is, again?" It's a very Ealing comedies kind of England, with no 1944 Education Act, and rationing having vanished rather faster than it actually did. Despite which, it was fun - though I felt by the end of the book that I'd heard that joke now, and didn't need any more. Interested to hear that the series stands up for you.

Flavia reminded me obliquely of Maria from Mistress Masham's Reose, and not just because of where they both live.
