I wondered if location had something to do with the rationing or lack of same. No, huh? Okay then. No excuse for it. Good to know. (And now that I think of it, being rural still wouldn't explain the ready availability of candy--or even most likely sugar--eggs and cream, yes, but there is not only sugar in desserts but store-boughten candy readily available in these books.)
