Ah, thanks - as I was reading the first few chapters, my mental picture of exactly when in the 20th century it was set was ranging widely, but I hadn't consciously figured out what was 'off' about the temporal cues. Rationing would have been a big one, obviously.

So far, the chemistry at least is impeccable, which pleases me.
