Using my movies boardgame.

I completed 4/5 movies from my last challenge, I liked 3 of them and decided to remove 1 from my PTW.

Avatar:

Animation
Skill: Reroll dice once

Roll #1

A 9, prompt: fantasy creatures. I feel like I saw this as a kid but can't be sure: The Princess and the Goblin.

Roll #2

A 4 and 'generate from PTW list' tile. A 96, so...oh boy, it's The Strangers: Prey at Night. Hard not to remember how the first one ended. We'll see how I do.

Roll #3

A 10, prompt: highest rated on PTW. I removed Psycho which was at the top, just don't think I'd enjoy it. 🤷 The next on the list at 4.2 is One Battle After Another.

Roll #4

A 6 and I'm trying for a higher number with my skill. A 9! Prompt: mystery element. Departing Seniors,

Roll #5

A 3, prompt: thriller. Down.

Roll #6

A 5 and the end. No reward this time because that's the mood.

[Horror/Thriller] The Strangers: Prey at Night âœ”️
[Action/Thriller] One Battle After Another

mom shares why she threw daughters ipad away (l) daughter using ipad on way to school (r)

Somewhere between “gentle parenting” and “yeet it into traffic” lies a very Florida solution. In an insanely viral TikTok, one fed-up mom casually confesses that she didn’t just threaten to confiscate her daughter’s iPad on the drive to school, she full-on launched it out the car window. In what viewers are calling a classic FAFO situation, this mom has most of the internet on her side. So the question is, what made her do it? And even better, what makes everyone side with the mom over the kid?

‘I Knew You Wouldn’t Do It’

Every parent knows what it’s like to get their patience tested daily. While many rely on threats to get their kids to behave, some kids already know the system. Threats are sometimes just threats and nothing more.

New Year's Resolutions Check In

We made it through the second week of January. This is enough to get a better grasp of progress with New Year's resolutions. It's also into the period of rapid die-off. We have reached the second Friday in January, also known as Quitter's Day because so many people give up their New Year's resolutions then. See also the parallel check in post over on [community profile] goals_on_dw.

Feel free to copy the idea of a New Year's resolution check-in to your blog or other venue, to encourage yourself and your friends. Many people find that social support helps maintain resolutions. This is one area where online activity works as well as or better than facetime activity. Apps work too, with trackers for most popular goal categories. Consider the pros and cons of getting your friends to help. Here on Dreamwidth we have [community profile] awesomeers and [community profile] do_it that may prove helpful for social support of goals. Some craft communities like [community profile] get_knitted and [community profile] justcreate also have check-in posts.

According to an email from Facebook, the survey found that those who shared their New Year's resolution on Facebook were 36 percent more likely to stick to it. Additionally, 52 percent of those surveyed agreed that sharing their resolutions with others is helpful when it comes to accomplishing them. In my experience, saying (or posting) things out loud definitely makes them feel more real. Plus, if other people know about a goal you're trying to achieve, it may motivate you to keep working at it so you can provide future updates on your progress.

woman shares yogu class experience (l) Yoga class (r)

Yoga is often treated as a women-centered activity in the U.S., especially when it comes to studio culture. Walk past most yoga classes, and you’ll usually see a room full of women, which has helped create the idea that these spaces function as a kind of quiet, shared refuge.

Of course, men practice yoga too, and plenty of them teach it professionally. Still, expectations form over time, especially when a studio’s regular crowd looks the same week after week.

The Traitors fans have been loathing one particular player this week. A lot of reality TV die-hards have been introduced to Michael Rapaport this season. Sports fans and other social media users are commiserating with The Traitors fans as they navigated his turbulent tenure on the show.

Rapaport has done nothing but make enemies since the moment he was introduced to the game. On social media platforms, it’s been even more of a mine field. The commentator has become an unwelcome presence in The Traitors fandom. But, social media conversation has consistently swirled around him this whole time.

Was out scraping packed down snow from the front sidewalk, now temps are however briefly above 'frozen solid', and had to step back for a gaggle of school kids coming up the street, lagging behind their impatient mother and dragging toboggans behind them. Shortly followed by NND and M heading out down the street with a toboggan. NND confirms that schools are still closed even though the streets are plowed. Whoever else may or jay not be enjoying this old fashioned winter, the kids must surely be in heaven. A four day weekend and infinite tobogganing, how cool is that?

Garbage trucks did make it out this evening, though I shall be surprised if people then put their bins back. Still don't see me going out any time soon. See: snowploughs creating mountain ridges at all street corners. Or pools, since tomorrow will be above freezing. Cooked a turkey roll and did a dark wash and tried to get the kitchen floor clean with indifferent success, and that was my day.

I was talking about story exchanges with friends and realized my kink list of yes/no/maybe in fiction dated to 2011.

And that that was 15 years ago.

I overhauled it, so for anyone interested in a dive into my kinks, by all means have at.

1. I had a very nice relaxing WFH day. (The only annoying part was the very loud construction on one end of the street and the tar smell which was coming from either that site or the construction at the other end of the street lol.)

2. We walked down to the Italian deli this morning to get sandwiches for lunch. Also a nice part of working from home! We knew it would be pretty hot today, so rather than walk there at lunch time, we went right after Carla woke up, when it wasn't too hot and there was still some shade for most of the walk.

3. I changed the bandage on my tattoo this morning and cleaned it up. It's looking really good! After changing it, there is still some fluid coming out, but doesn't seem to be any blood. They said to use the clear "second skin" bandage for up to a week, so I actually ordered some more off Amazon (she gave me enough for one change) in case I need to change it sooner. With the amount of fluid under it right now, I might.

4. Upon closer inspection it looks like Tuxie is missing some fur on his forehead, so I think he might have been in a fight while he was gone, but he seems fine otherwise. Better than that time he got a chunk of his ear ripped out.

Beyond Loch Ness ('08): It was better than I thought, there was definitely a level of ridiculousness still and a little spotty acting but I think I'll watch it again to catch what I didn't (there were no subs and I didn't feel like putting my headphones in). Also, the girl and her shitty boyfriend were the cliches cliche to ever cliche in these type of movies. I was surprised to see Beckett and Hammond's actors from Stargate and Leo's actor from Charmed in here!

Flight of the Living Dead ('07): Another that was better than expected, I felt like it had distinct characters even if some of them were terrible. Would rewatch.

The Little Mermaid ('24): Man falls in love with woman, almost destroys the world. Kinda lost interest a ways in and skimmed.

Dust Bunny ('25): The plot takes a while to start going anywhere but I got invested around 30 minutes in. I enjoyed the twist and turns it took. I was glad for the post-credits scene though I wonder how she's going to explain everything. 😅 4/5 stars

I took a look at Trunk - Locked in and decided not to watch it.

The Long Back Yard

#
Friday. Cloudy. Breezy. Cold.

The weather beans tell me that it's not going to snow today, but I'm watching flakes kind of just lazily drifting out of the sky so that's interesting.

I slept solid and never woke up until 7:30. The exciting end of book writing schedule is just exhausting. All together now: Writing is hard.

I'm sitting in the comfy chair overlooking the long backyard with the happy light on. Eventually I'll get up and get some breakfast and do my duty to the cats and wander off down coast for a bit.

I hope everybody has a good day.

Dictated to my phone.

Well. It was a nice day for a drive. Too cold to walk on the beach, though I saw some brave souls out there.

The spine doctor says keep doing what I'm doing. I have a referral to an osteo in Augusta, for manipulation, and also an extension on my PT ticket, since next time is the last time. I at least want that on file in case I need to go back, sorta like running a credit balance on your credit card.

Since it was all nice and sunny and all, and because I haven't practiced with my navigator for a while, I drove home up Route 9, and let the navigator take me through Portland.
Got home to find, despite the instructions being in my FedEx file AND the garage door being open so it would be easy to just sit the box inside, the deliveryperson had opted to throw the 50-lb box against the front door. That's right, so it didn't open.

I struggled, and got the door open, whereupon the latch on the screen door flew free and splotted on the driveway.

Went inside, took care of business, came back to go through the door and get my Stuff out of the car and! That's right! The door doesn't open.

I get out my phone to call my neighbor, only -- I can't make a call. I can, however, text, and she's home and she promises to come right over and let me out, just as soon as she gathers her tools, in case it was an easy fix.

While I'm waiting for her, I look out needlenose pliers, which don't work, and only then realize I can reach through the window and open the latch from the outside, which I do.

Neighbor arrives. We get the latch back on, precariously. We come to the mutual conclusion that the set screw has come loose. We collaborate on a temp fix. Neighbor goes home, comes back with husband who has arrived home in the meanwhile. He sets the screw, diagnosis a worn-out spring, and performs a more stable temporary fix. My mission next week (after I finish this. damned. book) will be to go to the hardware store and see if they can sell me another latching mechanism.

In the meanwhile, I tried to call my cell from my landline and learned that my number is not in service.

So! I guess I should go see what the Verizon page has to say to me about that.

And how was your Friday?
#
Verizon will call me back when it's my turn -- at 3:30 pm tomorrow.

So, that's fun. I hope nobody snabbles up my phone number in the meantime.

I bought a sandwich at the Saco Hannaford, but with one thing and something else, I never got around to eating it, so I'm thinking, I'll search up Coon Cat Happy Hour, pour a glass of wine and open my sandwich.
#
Late updatery: I rebooted my phone and it is now Fully Operational.

I have canceled my litter order from Petco, so I never have to deal with FedEx again. It cost me a little bit of a pang, because it was one of the systems Steve had put into place, but he never meant it to get this stoopid.

I will be writing tomorrow, Saturday, and the next day, Sunday. With only a little bit of luck, I'll finish this damned draft.

--> It's very important that whatever your politics, you look for news that is on the other side of issues, as long as it is high-fact-containing. Media bias charts can help you figure out reliable sources.

Non-reliable sources are CBS, Fox, OAN.

"THIS IS A POST ABOUT WHY FASCIST ELITES MUST RECRUIT MEN AS FOOT SOLDIERS WHO HATE AND FEAR ASSERTIVE WOMEN TO THE POINT OF VIOLENCE AND MURDER.
… especially those portrayed as “disobedient, Communist whores” or whatever the current terms for uppity women are … The man who has unearthed more about the fascist mind than anyone before or since is Klaus Theweleit, an 83-year-old German sociologist."

"And the men who become fascist foot soldiers are highly correlated with the fear of, and malevolent hatred for women who … “do not know their place.”
Theweleit uses his sources to demonstrate that women (ALL women) are more like non-player-characters (NPCs) to the fascist foot soldiers than people. Only other men, and REALLY only other fascist men, are people." Sources are listed at the end of the article.

This was it. This was the week that America admitted America is going fascist – which is to say has gone fascist, i.e. has had its government seized by fascists with broad fascist support for imposing fascism which it is now doing with zeal, i.e. has an acute case of fulminant fascism.

I've been watching this bear down on us for a half a century, so it's slightly dizzying to finally have everybody else come into alignment. One of the basic exigencies of my life has been moving through the world being reasonably certain of a bunch of things that I knew the vast majority of my fellows thought were insane to believe. Over the last ten years, more and more people have been noticing, "what are we doing in this handbasket and where is it going?" but – as evidenced by the behavior of the DNC over the last year – it's taken the secret police gunning Americans down in the streets (since I started writing this: and throwing flashbang grenades at or into (reports vary) passing cars carrying little kids) for the greater liberal mass to come around.

Obviously, it would have been nicer for the realization It Could Happen Here to have not required It Happening Here to be the conclusive rebuttal of their pathological skepticism. But one of my favorite sayings is, "There's three kinds. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves," (Will Rogers) and this is why. Clearly America needed to piss on the electric fence for itself. I try to be philosophical about it.

I just felt, if only for myself and posterity, I should note this long-in-coming nation-wide realization has finally been attained.

I'm not getting too carried away, though. It's hard to be too jubilant when the problem that brought us here is still very much with us, by which I don't mean the fascism itself, I mean the terrible mentality on "my" "side" that causes that pathological skepticism and other catastrophic thinking faults that brought us to this pass and lead to the fascists getting away, quite literally, with murder.

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want.

The fact that I can usually manage to see the humour in situations and don't get moody and sulky about minor stuff.

The fact that I'll try creating for any character once and give them all some attention rather than sticking to the same old favourites.

The fact that you always know where you are with me, I can't be doing with fake bullshit/not saying what I mean/expecting people to be psychic/not using my words type crap.

Recently Finished

Peril at the Exposition
Second in the Captain Jim and Lady Diana mystery series. I was disappointed to see that this one doesn't take place in India, so I hadn't jumped right on it after finishing the first, but my backlog of audiobooks was going down, so I decided to give it a go. It was fine. I'll probably read more in the series at the same pace, but it's also not really what I'm wanting in a mystery (and that was the same with the first one).

Deeds and Words
Another second book in a mystery series, though it seems like this is also the final book. It was also just all right.

Riot Baby
Set in a slightly more dystopic alternate reality, this tells the story of a girl with psychic powers and her brother, who was born after the LA riots, thus being nicknamed Riot Baby, in alternating POVs. I liked this, but it felt like the two POVs weren't really well integrated.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street
In the late 1800s England, a man gets a mysterious watch that saves him from a bomb exploding, and then is tasked with finding out if the watchmaker, a Japanese man who can remember the future, is the one who set the bomb. I didn't much like this at all. The first half or more was extremely boring, and then once the action seemed to finally get going, the characters got worse and worse, especially the lone female character, who seems to exist only as a plot device to make everything horrible for the men.

Little Monsters vol. 1-2
Two volume comic series about child vampires living in an empty city after an apocalypse. I liked it all right. The ending was good.
