mrissa: (question)

That's "advice" rather than "knowledge."

I keep thinking I should eat really crunchy things while I still can. But it turns out I already don't want them; my wisdom teeth are making my mouth sore. I don't actually want to eat much, and I don't intend to subsist on ice cream for a fortnight. Anybody have good suggestions (possibly with recipes?) for soft smooshy food? Soups? Something?

Miso soup is pretty close to something one can subsist on for a fortnight while unable to eat anything else.

Hmmm...also rice is soft...so maybe it will be a moral imperative that I get sushi one of these days.

Oh, wailie woe.

Actually I don't. I like yogurt, especially with strawberries. But I'm in a very silly mood this morning. Yogurt is a good idea.

Carrot dill soup.

Yoghurt-cucumber stuff (which I can never spell: yoghurt, cucumber, lemon juice, a little garlic maybe) on softish bread.

Hummus and pita bread. (My teeth were more or less ok with pita bread: tolerances may vary a lot.)

There's all sorts of buttermilk based soups, too, that are cool and easy to swallow.

Gazpacho done up fairly fine, though we're a little early yet for any really good veggies.

Smoothies and related things of many types.

Creamy mashed potatoes. Pasta sauce without the pasta, blended to smooth it if necessary. Yogurt.

I think pasta may be soft enough if cooked a little longer than I usually like. Not lasagna crunchy-bits, of course. Oh how I love lasagna crunchy-bits.

bread pudding! and tapioca (you can have my share: I do ont want it) Are sandwiches too chewey? And, well, something like Ensure that has vitamins and calories? though I'm sure a homemade smoothy would taste better. Hmm, Ida know. Personally, eating any one thing for more than a couple days in a row wears on me, so I'm not much help I guess.

I suppose sandwiches could be filled with something like eggsalad that isn't generally crunchy. I tend to put fruit or veggies or even sunflower seeds in my normal sandwiches, if I have them at all, but eggsalad may well be our friend.

scrambled eggs
tapioca
smoothies (yogurt and fruit, blender, mmm.)

Whatever you do, do *not* drink anything through a straw. Dry sockets are *not* your friend.

Also, this white bean soup rocks:

I think I will make it today.

That looks extremely good. Rosemary-infused olive oil is one of my favorite things in the whole world, and how could garlic make it worse? It could not.

Garlic mashed potatoes. Or any flavor of baked or mashed potato; they're almost infinitely extensible. Pureed soups - well, mine are almost always potato and leek soup, but there's lots of different varieties of squash or gazpacho (I have no recipes because I dislike them).

Risotto might work. Refried beans. If you actually like cauliflower, you can steam it, puree it, and flavor it with a bit of butter - I hate the stuff, and the amount of butter it takes me to make that palatable totally negates any health benefits gained from actually eating it.

Pumpkin pie. Pumpkin soup, actually.

What I like to do with cauliflower is to put it in an African-inspired peanut soup with tomato, chile pepper, ginger, and garlic.

Come to think of it, that well might be good pureed too, and you could omit the chile pepper.

* soft boiled eggs/scrambled eggs
* bread dipped in milk flavored with cinnamon/sugar
* creamy soups (many have been suggested already)
* soft fruits like peaches, strawberries minus the seeds if those tend to get into your teeth--can also do the smoothie thing
* creamy peanut butter on soft bread with jam/jelly

In fact, I may twist [livejournal.com profile] dd_b's arm to go tomorrow. Because usually it takes a good deal of twisting, you know. I will have to pull out all the "woe is me my face hurts and I have big brown puppy eyes" stops to be effective, I feel sure.

From: [identity profile] writingortyping.livejournal.com
Oh, I have never met [livejournal.com profile] dd_b personally but given what I know (or assume based on photographs) about your relative size difference, I am sure the puppy eyes (possibly complete with woeful puppy whimper) might be needed to offset the actual arm-twisting.

On the other hand (*rimshot*), I actually did twist his arm last time we went, and I think I twisted it a good ten degrees before he gave into my brutish Mris Fu. I think the gravitational field of Sebastian Joe's amplifies my strength. Hey, maybe that's one of my superpowers!

When I had my wisdom teeth out (and I had a surgical extraction rather than a simple extraction, which is apparently a bigger PITA), soft wasn't as big and issue as "not sharp" and "unlikely to become little grainy bits that stick in the suture/socket/etc.

Pasta was easy because it doesn't need to be masticated into oblivion before swallowing. Meat mostly in it's original form wasn't so good (steak, etc) but processed (lunchmeat, hamburger) were not too bad. Mashed potatoes, even french fries.

Nuts, chips, flimsy white bread, all bad things. Flee!

If you don't have one, get yourself a waterpik - that way if something DOES sneak in there you can gently wash it out without probing (painful) or swishing (suction thus generated was uncomfortable for me).

I was going to mention this when I got to the bottom of the comments. I tried grits (a favorite of mine) but had problems with the granules getting in the sockets. I would anticipate the same issue with tapioca, rice/risotto, smoothies made with seedy-berries, oatmeal, etc.

I had the best luck with instant mashed potatoes, soups, icy things.

When I had a wisdom tooth out -- a fairly straightforward procedure, done by my regular dentist -- I ate a lot of tofu in black bean sauce: protein, soft and easy on my teeth, and the black bean sauce gave it enough flavor to be interesting.

Drew was able to down this soup recipe (courtesy of <ljuser="brandelion">) by day three. I know I made three batches of the stuff for him. (And yum, it's currently my favorite soup, too.) :

2 (15 ounce) cans black beans, drained and rinsed
1 1/2 cups vegetable broth
1 cup chunky salsa
1 teaspoon ground cumin
4 tablespoons sour cream
2 tablespoons thinly sliced green onion

In an electric food processor or blender, combine beans, broth salsa and cumin. Blend until fairly smooth.
Heat the bean mixture in a medium saucepan over medium heat until thoroughly heated. To serve, ladle soup into 4 individual bowls and top each bowl with 1 tablespoon of the sour cream, and 1/2 teaspoon green onion.

When my braces are bothering me, I tend to eat things like soup, risotto, oatmeal, pasta (cooked a little longer than usual, smaller sizes), yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, refried beans, and scrambled eggs. Which sounds disgusting, now that I type it all out, but is not so bad when they're not considered together. :)

Already lots of good suggestions for soft foods. But I predict within 48 hours or so of surgery you'll be feeling better than you are now. :-)

I have lots of experience with soft foods, having had braces and jaw surgery. You know, like make a shake out of your meatloaf and potatos, etc. Yuck. I think subsisting on ice cream is exactly the right attitude.

I have a *fantastic* bell pepper soup recipe, if you'd like it. There are two versions: once involves fresh dill and the other is a "mexican variation" with cumin and cilantro. The peppers and all get cooked until they are tender, and then blended, so I suspect that you'd be able to handle it -- now and after -- without a problem.

I have actually developed significant soup prowess, so if you'd like other recipes -- an as-spicy-as-you-choose-to-make-it Thai carrot soup, a coconut milk Thai soup, or a tortilla soup recipe, for example -- I'd be more than happy to be your supplier.

From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
Yes, please do send the pepper soup recipe(s). I love dill and cilantro, so either would be welcome. I'm not keen on coconut in any form, milk included, but carrots are nice, too.

Date: 2005-06-15 10:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gaaldine.livejournal.com
I abhor coconut, too, but have discovered that coconut milk really doesn't taste like coconut (or else that the recipes I use it in have enough lemongrass and ginger to obscure the taste). Anyway, the Thai carrot soup recipe also involves some coconut milk, but you can't taste or see it, as far as I can tell. I'll send the recipes along (via email) shortly.
