Every time the comic seems to be painted into a corner or going nowhere, one of the characters gets redesigned. "It's like the guy coming in with the gun," he said.

"Writers should collect those," I said. "Different guys with guns for different circumstances. Because more ways to get yourself out of a jam are always useful."
