Baen's new magazine is buying "The Opposite of Pomegranates." Neat! This is a story I wrote for a pair of [livejournal.com profile] elisem earrings called, "'Oh, yeah?' said the rock sprite."

Coincidentally, I am wearing those earrings today.

Awesome! Is it about a planet that achieves a peaceful utopia and throws away all its weapons, only to be immediately besieged by hostile aliens?

No, but thanks for asking!

Hmm, it's not about that, yet it's a Baen market? The Civil War, with aliens? What what, what is it about?

Any read on what about the story attracted them? I doubt I'll have any stories in a condition to submit any time soon, but like [livejournal.com profile] nihilistic_kid, I'm a bit curious about how closely Flint is sticking to Baen's *ahem* characteristic brand of SF.

I would characterize this as a light, fun fantasy. Don't know if that means they're looking for light, fun fantasies in general or just liked this one, though.

But the opposite of pomegranates is still something many people like, not to spoil it too much.

I'm afraid I've sold too many stories to too many pro markets to qualify as a "new author" by their standards. By the official standards of the field, I am not a new author but a professional science fiction author, even though most people actually in the field would still describe me as "new."

Also, I did not submit through their forum but through the slush pile. Most other pro markets consider it publishing to have a story printed somewhere on a website (in my opinion, rightly so), and while I am very glad to be published by this market, I'm not glad enough to throw away any chance of being published anywhere else.

I wanted to check what was known about the market you sold to, and I can't find any mention of it on the Baen web site. I guess it has its own site, but there really should be some sort of link! Huh, I found the actual title on boing boing, but no mention of it on Baen's site, and it doesn't seem to have its own yet. Seems a strange oversight; Locus has an article too, so why no news item on the Baen site?

Hope it works out. Eric actually seems mostly sensible. I think he and Jim have a bit of an over-reaction to "new wave" stories; I think the PJF answer is the right one really. But I'm firmly in the "style should serve the story" camp myself, as are all right-thinking people.

It's brand-new, so it'll probably have some mention when it launches. At least that's my guess.

I like some New Wave stuff, too (here is where I do my Delany dance), but yah, for me style is an aspect of how one is handling a story, not a reason for N thousand words all by itself.

On one hand, of course this is good news! On the other hand, I'm wondering about contact information for the new magazine. I have a novelet that was once called "The Tree of Life is Dying" -- will retitle it "Trees of Life" when I submit it in this decade -- that Stan Schmidt and George Scithers looked at three times apiece, that Eric Vinicoff wanted for his s-f adventure magazine (which never came out), and that Elinor Mavor had wanted for *Amazing Stories,* but was overstocked at the time I submitted it (and by the time the money for her to send me a check had come through, she no longer had the job, but had been replaced) -- I suspect that anything Baen supported would be at least a fair fit. So: Can you enlighten me? (And can I locate the manuscript, 15 years after having stopped sending it around?) Thanks.

Nate B.
