It is extremely disturbing to realize that a large portion of my self-image as regards my loved ones being distressed is...umm...

Wolverine. Yah. From the X-Men.

Cutslashstompsnarlsmackslash take that, bad stuff.

And another component is (oh God) Miles Vorkosigan. Bouncefussplanfussadministriviazapboom.

There is also a strong heritage-chick component of Valkyrie.

Sadly, very few of the problems facing my loved ones respond well to claws, ImpSec, or flying bosomy chicks with swords and/or axes.

Umm. Perhaps that's not sad after all.

I swear I used to date Wolverine. It was exciting, but not always pleasant. He's a father now.

I can see that, yep. The bit that looks like Hugh Jackman in my head is not the furthest brainbits I've got from maternal, not by any stretch.

I used that expression on the phone with [livejournal.com profile] cristalia just last week, and I think an e-mail to someone as well.

I realized a couple of years ago that while I have a strong "protect my family/people", it's likely to manifest as putting myself physically between my loved one and the danger.

I desperately want to do that.

When the problem is something like "stupid boss person," it's merely a bad idea. When the problem is "depression" or "chronic pain," it's physically impossible. But I would try, oh, I would try.

I know what you mean about that. For blazing away, I preferred Storm though, and Jean was fine as Dark Phoenix.

(*I truly think the hardest things for me are those of others.)

Smiting evildoers with lightning might be all right. I might could handle that.

I realized this explicitly in a context where it did, in fact, seem likely that I was going to need to do this. Or, rather, realized it a minute or two after the situation was defused without my having needed to do so.

On the other hand, I've found that flying bosomy chicks with swords and/or axes have solved a great many of my problems. But adamantium class are a definite plus.

Don't you wish that you really had ImpSec on your side, even if it was for just one day? Oh, the muck I would rake and the heads I would roll... or mess with, at least.

Me, I'm not sure I'd want the whole bureaucracy that comes with it. But having a Pym on hand would be lovely, and having an Ivan at hand might be ... entertaining...

We were talking just the other day about how Ivan seems to be willing to behave more intelligently the further he feels he is from the throne. When Gregor has three or four children, we expect him to start publishing hyperphysics papers or some such.

*cackles*

Self-preservation is not a bad trait. One might wonder if there's any possibility that Ivan subsconciously developed it as a reaction to his Da's demise, but one should probably go back to work and mull it over later.

Agreed. I've enjoyed the evolution of Ivan's character almost as much as I've enjoyed watching Miles grow over the years.

I just hope that Ms. Bujold makes her way back to Barrayar soon. As much as I've been enjoying the Chalion series of novels, I'm yearning for a new Miles book. Speaking as a reader, it seems very unfair that it takes a couple of years of hard labour to craft a decent novel yet I can devour one in a scant few hours. Not only does that seem vaguely disrespectful to the author, but it leaves ME waiting another two bloody years for the next book, darn it.

So, better to have the powers of a different office that can cut through bureaucracy...hmm...I wonder what that would be like for Miles? Heh.

*grin* I was thinking more of trading, but yeah... no problems at all would be nice.

(But it would be really cool to see you with claws and a sword and attacking things...)

Sort of a mixed blessing, I'd think. Particularly because while they may be part of your self-image, they're not really things you *have*, exactly, so even if they did respond to claws, for example, you'd still have to find the claws.

For some of the problems my loved ones have? I would totally find claws. No matter where I had to look.

Oh, well, we Vorkosigans have to stick together, I guess.

My self-image of protectiveness is more like my icon here. "You forgot CUTE and FLUFFY!"

Definitely I would (and do when possible) put myself between my loved ones and anything threatening them. I don't so often picture myself smiting, though, but laughing or staring at the threat until it wilts and slinks away. Oddly, this seems to translate pretty well for me into real-life action in a lot of cases.
