I am sad that I have not written more books.

Not for some ambitious career-driven reason. I just want to read more of my books.

I think this is the most self-centered arrogant reason for being sad I've come up with all week.

Seriously, one of my biggest thrills as a writer is being distant enough from my writing that I can come back to it and enjoy it as a reader. I think it's wonderful to want to experience your work that way.

I like that idea, writing books so you can enjoy reading them yourself. The happier flip side is that, since you have the kind of brain that does that kind of thing, you know you have more Mrissa books to look forward to reading.

Because it's always sad when you run out of new books by an author you enjoy.

I'm a fan of people being centered in themselves.

But, no, I know what you're saying, and it amuses me, but I also (like everyone else here) think it's pretty cool.

There's this thing most people I know who write seem to have to go through, where first you start wanting to write because there's a book you want to read but it doesn't exist, so dammit, you'll write it yourself, just so you can have it. And then there's the realization that this doesn't generally work (I know there are exceptions - I think misia has self-identified as one), that writing isn't the same as reading, that it may be fun but it doesn't do what you started out wanting: usually, you can't just go and write the book you want to read.

But fortunately, that doesn't mean you can't write *a* book you want to read.

I think Dwarf's Blood Mead was the book I intended to write. Thermionic Night and Sampo might be, too -- I'll have to see when I'm done revising the latter. But the others, you're right, are still books I want to read, even if not the books I intended to write.

Dude, I get the same feeling sometimes. And, recently re-reading the novel I intend to pitch to my editor next, I was pleased to notice that -- although the beginning definitely drags and I can SO improve it from what I wrote however many years ago -- there were bits farther in that I was positively gleeful while reading. It gives me hope, when I can enjoy my own work like that.
