Brain: We should write a book set in Australia!
Me: We're already writing a book. And we know nothing about Australia.
Brain: We could learn! There are lots and lots of books out there that have something to do with Australia, and we could read them and listen to The Waifs and Aboriginal music and think the thinky thoughts about water and deserts and colonialism and magic and the rest of this worldbuilding stuff.
Me: Um....
Brain: And then it would be years until we had time to deal with Sampo again.
Me: Back to work, you.
Brain: *sulk*

That sounds awfully familiar. Except for the Australia part.

Which deserts are you thinking thinky thoughts about?

Sosostris' Icon reminds me of The Teddy Bears' Picnic as it was in Angel and your post of a line from one of Ben's favorite books.

Somedays are like that, even in Australia.

But, luckly, you can write about Australia without listening to the Waifs.

=v= You don't mind naming all your characters Bruce? To avoid confusion?

Ever read any Garth Nix? He's a native-born Australian and it comes through in his works, or at least the ones I've read: Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen. If you've never heard of him, I'll post a recommendation blurb.

Not only have I posted several recommendations of his stuff, I got to interview him once.

Well, I'm used to it with Eric/Erik/Erick here in the northlands. (I like Eric/Erik/Erick much better than Bruce, as names go, though.)

Somehow I'm not surprised that you know all about him! Do you have any convenient links where I can read what you wrote? I'll try a journal search and see if I can find it.

I thought the Abhorsen series was very fresh and original. I haven't tried more than a few short stories beyond that, so am not sure where to go next for his novels.

Through your very handy bibliography page, I found the Speculon interview, though I can't find Speculon itself. I did find the journal entries you commented on the Garbeliad at, though, so I'm going from there. Thanks!

[livejournal.com profile] timprov's health has made it impossible for him to maintain Speculon over the last several years.

I love his newest series, the one that starts with Mister Monday. They'll probably be shelved in children's, although some places shelve them in YA.

I am very glad that I'm not the only one thinking like this.

The Mister Monday series (I forget what it's really called) is shelved in children's at my favorite library, Hoover.

I'll take a look!

I'm sorry to hear that. It must have been difficult for him to give it up.
