When I said Wednesday that I was in a period of weird reticence, part of what I meant was that I am feeling strangely reluctant to mention social stuff, even though nobody has been asking me to keep it secret that I saw them. [livejournal.com profile] laurel, for example, served me mulled cider -- okay, I need to go to bed, because I typed that as "mulled spider" and had to think hard about why it was wrong. (I woke up way too early this morning.) And I got to see other cool people than [livejournal.com profile] laurel, too. That was Friday.

Today [livejournal.com profile] markgritter and the folks and the grands and Onie and I went to the Nutcracker. Met up with several people there, including K. and F. who were dancing in it. Good time had by all, except maybe the poor kid who was injured in the snowflake section. My mom wants to theater-geek with [livejournal.com profile] theferret some more, and my grandmother commented several times on how B. is "really your girl!" (Yah, I'll take her.)

Got to spend a fair amount of time with the grands and Onie while they were here. That's been good, too.

The only real down side to this week has been that [livejournal.com profile] timprov has felt like the wreck of the Hesperus and has missed several things he really wanted to do. But he's been coping with it pretty well, and he has a doctor's appointment coming up.

I have started planning lunch, coffee, and dinner with other people a bit more frequently again, and I'm going to try to get a few more of such occasions on the calendar before everyone goes nuts with the holidays. We're not having a Christmas party -- nor a Mikulas party, a Lucia party, a Solstice party, a Boxing Day party, a New Year's party, a Twelfth Night party, or an MLKJr. party, to the best of my knowledge -- but it occurs to me once again that the advantage of having a party is that you have a much better chance that everyone you know will come to your party (still not a good chance, but a better one) than you do that they'll come to someone else's party. Ah well. There's lunch. I am a big fan of lunch.

Mulled Spider

Obviously, the most important thing is selecting the spider. Any spider of the order Araneomorphae will be suitable for mulling, as they tend to be most flavorfull, without the bitterness associated with the Mesothelae.

The common daddy long-legs is one of the more popular spiders for mulling, with a curious minty flavor and a nutty finish. To mull this friendly spider, begin with at least 20-40 spiders, 2 sticks of cinnamon, nutmeg, and four cups of an appropriate wine as a base. Always use white wine for mulling spiders, preferably something dry and subtle so as not to overpower the delicate complexity of the arachnid.

Oh, no! So sorry to hear that [livejournal.com profile] timprov has been feeling so unwell this week. :( I hope they are able to fix whatever is hurting him. I know it's a recurring thing and that he has his good days and his not so great days, but I'm hoping they can increase the number of better ones for him soon. It's stressful to love someone who hurts and know you cannot fix it, so extra hugs go to you, and hugs to him, and I will be thinking the most healing of thoughts for him. Please let us know how things are going for him after his doctor visit.

Glad you got to see Laurel. Wish we could have stopped in at the party and gotten to see you too. Did you, in fact, have a bad reaction to her cats? I was curious to find out about that. We almost went but Logan fell asleep in the car and we wound up going home. We don't get out enough. It would have been nice to see everyone.

You are correct; lunch is a Good Thing. And no doubt there will be many grand and friendly lunches in your December. :)

I am a big fan of lunch.

Lunch is good. In fact, I'm just about to go on my lunch break now.

Seems I rarely schedule lunch with a friend. One or the other of us is bound to be asleep…

Do you crush the spiders, put them in the spice bag, or leave them whole?

I'm hoping the number of better days for [livejournal.com profile] timprov increases soon, too, but we'll see how it goes. In part we probably should just plan that some weeks will be like this.

I didn't have a bad reaction to the cats at all. We were only there maybe an hour and a half, but still, that's enough time for things to go really badly if they were going to go really badly. I still won't plan a fortnight of houseguesting with them, but that wasn't really on the agenda anyway.

That is a problem! Sometimes you could probably have lunch with [livejournal.com profile] timprov, except that, 1) it's not predictable when he'll be awake at that hour and lunching, and 2) he can't drive, and 3) you don't know him. But other than that, it'd be ideal.

Crush them, rather like garlic, to release the flavors. Never tried using a spice bag. Interesting idea.

Yah, but scouring the spider legs out of the garlic press seems like a PITA.

When we were in college and had no equipment, my friend Vanya slightly damaged a pot by putting garlic cloves under it and punching it. But the spaghetti sauce that resulted was awfully good.
