Some of you will recall that On Spec had a typo in the title of the first Carter Hall story, listing it as, "Carter Hull Recovers the Puck" instead of "Carter Hall Recovers the Puck."

Yesterday I got e-mail from Carter Hull, saying that he doesn't play hockey at all.

I am amused.

That's pretty funny. Of course *Carter Hall* doesn't play hockey, either. He's too busy being Hawkman (DC Comics). ;)

YARRRRRRRRRRRRG! Oh nooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Well, it can't be helped; that's his name.

I'd been wondering if you knew of the comics character and was looking for a diplomatic way to bring it up. And yeah, once a character has a name set in my mind, that's pretty much it, so I understand.

And this one is not only set in my mind (and in print in On Spec in everything but the title!), but a reference to the Tam Lin ballad, so there's really only so much wiggle room.

The fact that it's his name AND it being a reference to Tam Lin is a Very Happy Bit to me.

And now I'm wondering how magazines that aren't say Asimov's manage to get collections and anthologies. Hmmm. I don't recall Asimov's doing it often. Maybe I just amn't aware. Just because I don't see it has nothing to do whether something exists, after all.

It depends on what you're thinking of. Anthologies featuring a multi-author "Best of" from a magazine are fairly common, though I don't recall On Spec having one. Varies a lot.

As for single-author collections with stories printed in various places, or mostly in one place, the magazines don't usually have much to do with that, as far as I know.

I was thinking of the first kind, but preferring the second.

Asimov's sent me their _Best of Asimov's_ a long time ago. I don't remember any of the stories at all. I really wanted the glow-in-the-dark astronomy mug, but they'd run out.

There were a couple of dozen (at least) Best from Fantasy and Science Fiction. There was an anthology of stories from "Astounding" (called Prologue to Analog.)

Thank you, SethB. I wonder if they were products of the 80s as well. Hrm, I would've made it 'Prolog to Analog' for the double match instead of just rhyme - but that's how I am. :>

Were they any good?
