Four rejections. I am amused at one of them: it was too optimistic for this editor. This story was too pessimistic for the last editor I tried. I am just too...something. For somebody.

One of the things I am "too" is too peaky for "Cymbeline," apparently. I decided better to give it a miss and rest up this evening than to push myself, exhaust myself, and end up missing big chunks of the week to come -- particularly as I believe I'll see most of the people who were thinking of going elsewhere, and none of them seemed to be relying upon me for transportation etc. I'm sorry to be missing it, but it was one of those times where the decision seemed pretty clear.

I think I've decided on something to read at Minicon. I think I may do what I hate in other people and read an excerpt of an unsold novel. I know, it's evil. I know, it really might not be a good idea. But Chapter 5 of The Mark of the Sea Serpent has been calling to me. You know, Chapter 5: the one where they find out about the decapitated pantheon on the iceberg. I am fond of it, and I suspect that reading something I'm fond of is a very good idea. And the lead-in to it could be very brief without loss of relevance to that bit.

I may change my mind.

You are technically correct -- the very best kind of correct.

...has been calling to me

As sound a reason as any.

Sorry to hear about the peakiness -- hope the rest of the weekend goes more smoothly.

It's not the chapter on the ice floe, though -- that seems like it would require a lot more "um, and then this guy -- wait, did I tell you who this guy is? -- said to the other guy this thing, and there are these underwater tigers because the magic has gone weird, and -- okay, just a sec, how much longer have we got?"
