Q: What do Josh Ritter, coffeeem, and my grandfather have in common?

A: They can all make me care about myths and tropes of the American (Cowboy) West when precious little else can.

(I don't have the data about coffeeem to say whether "A2: They are all good company when driving across Souther Minnesota" is accurate, but I played Josh Ritter albums through the misty hills and prairie, and I've enjoyed talking to my grandpa in similar circumstances.)

This is most certainly true.

And it's more true that people who sing well are fun to sing with in the car than that people who converse well are fun to converse with in the car, on average. Some combinations of people in a car just freeze up, and people who could talk perfectly well for hours in a hotel lobby at a convention end up with, "Umm...how 'bout them Wild? Did you hear about Mikko's leg? I couldn't believe...oh. Not a hockey fan. Okay. How 'bout them...um...things?"

Well, that's just it: if you get a good in-car dynamic, you find yourself sitting there going, "I had no idea that's who invented the clippy thing on pens! Cool!", whereas if it's a bad one, topics that otherwise make you genuinely excited are awkward and uncomfortable. Car dynamics are very important.
