A Finnish SF magazine, Spin will be translating and reprinting my novelette, "Irena's Roses." This is a first for me: I've been published outside the US many times but never translated. And for it to be a Finnish mag just feels so appropriate to me. Go Finns! Go me! Oh, I am so pleased.

And from this we discover that my Finnish-English dictionary lacks not only "woot" (which I expected) but also "hurrah," "hooray," and "yippee." All of which are pretty well-established English words, in my understanding of it...but it's a smallish dictionary.

Mmph. I am also suspicious of this as a transposition, because I reckon w00t is not w00t unless it is built out of zeroes amidst the letters; it's just inherently more geeky, y'know?

This reminds me of something I've been curious about for awhile. How specific are the usage conventions around "Uff da"? I mean, the times I've seen it used (almost all of them by you, so yeah, not a large sample size), they've all looked sort of equivalent to *headshaking* (as used in present context: internet chat, blog conventions), and hence one from a different background, in different circumstances - say a spoken conversation, might have used various swear words or religious background related appeals (sufficiently common in this context not to need repeating) (English), "Mamma Mia" with upward eye-rolling (Italian), "Ai-yah" (Chinese), etc...etc.... but I'm sure that there are areas where the various expressions don't overlap as well. For example, using my ancestral, though not personal idiom, ai-yah can be used as an expression of delight. ...as well as irritation, scolding, 'don't be silly', 'hurry up', welcome, sudden pain, surprise and sympathy among other things, depending on context and appropriate accompanying body language.

I have translated it as "oy veh" before. I think most English swear words are too specific. Some few people are as versatile with a single swear word as we can be with "uff da," but it's a very specialized talent, so far as I've seen. But if you're going to use uff da for delight or scolding or welcome, it's going to need context. The rest are pretty standard, though.

ooOOOOoooh. Congratulations! This is far better than the converse situation, though possibly not as lucrative.

Mom complains about how little translation pays, and how boring the work is.

Being the original author probably pays even less than an hourly translation gig, but is likely much less boring. (Then again, Mom was translating "How to use your laptop" documentation for IBM at the time, so that is understandably boring work.)

You should start a union and demand that fiction authors be paid hourly... Then you can be paid to sleep...

I love short story translations. They don't happen often, and they tend (for me, at least) to come from unexpected quarters - Mexico! Estonia! Like that...

And yes, Finnish for you is more than apt. Will you contrive to read it, when it comes?

Err. I will look at the words and see if any of them might leap out at me as familiar, let's put it that way. I have so very little Finnish that, "Hello, how are you?" is beyond my reading skills. ("Ilmarinen got in the boat," is not; make of that what you will.)

My Chinese is very similar; I can do a very convincing version of "I speak Chinese very badly; shall we speak in English now?", but that's not much after a couple of years of study...

(I did happen to glance at a Chinese/English text t'other day, and it said [two Chinese characters]="landscape", and I thought "shan shui = hills & water = landscape! Okay!" so all is not lost, but most of it undoubtedly is...)

Ah. Whereas I have spent exactly zero years studying Finnish, except for listening to yoik and other Finnish folk music and obsessively reading the footnotes in the Finnish histories and mythologies and etc.
