One or the other can be "just okay" (so far, for example, the Hillermans are strong on setting) as long as the prose is not scream-worthy. I am not attached to the central mystery being difficult to solve, if the prose is good and there's some of setting and/or character.
I can see where a list would be very hard for you to make right now. Mine was pretty hard, too, but I think it was good for me to do it. (Which doesn't mean you have to, of course.)
