It has been a good full day celebrating my mom's birthday, including brunch and godkid-time and cake-baking and lo these many fine things.

To top it off, I got e-mail from John at Not One of Us saying he'd like to buy my radio astronomy short story, "Five Ways to Ruin a First Date." Sound horns! Bang drums! Look with increasing alarm at the small number of short stories still out on submission! Hmm. Maybe that last bit can be reserved for just me.

ETA: Huh. Seventy short story sales sneak up on you faster than you'd think.

I think that the flip side of the people who become praise junkies when we praise kids constantly are the people who distrust all external recognition because it was clearly meaningless. I keep running into too many friends who are convinced that they are doing nothing with their lives despite doing quite a bit, because they keep moving the goalposts, because if somebody said it was good it must obviously be easy and meaningless.

I keep trying not to do that to myself. It's okay to be ambitious to do more without disparaging what we've already done, no matter what the field.

Thanks.
