I said this over on Facebook, but I will repeat myself here:

[livejournal.com profile] markgritter and I are going to the Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company's performance of H.M.S. Pinafore on Saturday at the Lake Harriet Bandshell. We'll be bringing picnic for ourselves, which will probably include enough bars and/or cookies to share with a few people if people turn up. The performance starts at 7:30. We will be picnicking somewhat in advance of that. If you're around and going to be there, look for us. We're likely to be on lawn chairs on the little rise behind the benches.

GSVLOC generally puts priority on music first, costume second, and dance third. That's for their stage productions. At the bandshell it's not a fully enacted performance, it's mostly just the music, possibly some funny hats. (For those of you who like dance a great deal, this may actually be a good thing: no need to worry that anyone will butcher the choreography.) They really want to get you out of there by dark, too, so the intermission is short and the pacing moves along at a really good clip.

I'll wave to you from here - I've ALWAYS wanted to see a production of the Pinafore...

You've never seen one? What, never?

That's very sad. I hope something comes around your neck of the woods soon.

The problem with that particular musical exchange is that when the answer really is never, reiterating, "What, never?" can be annoying for the other person who has to say, "No, really never, all right? Not as a musical reference! Just as me not getting to do the fun thing yet!"

I wish you fun thing soon.

Oh my...never? Very sad.

(Also greatly appreciating Marissa's joke here!)

The Gilbert and Sullivan Very Light Opera company is a great resource. They've done FAR the best amateur performances I've seen (I've only seen a couple of professional performances, and the best GSVLOC have been better than one of the professional ones). They've gone though the whole canon several times since I've been following them, at the stately rate of one performance a year (the concert performances are usually something from a recent year, rather than the same as the current year's fully-staged performance).

I can't tell if they don't care as much about dance, or if they simply have a small enough stage that it limits their choreography seriously. Since I don't care as much about dance, it's not a big worry for me, anyway.
