I was looking at clothes for the elder niecelet's birthday before we decided that we are way too awesome to get her clothes unless they twirl or do something else equally wondrous fine for a 4-year-old, so Legos and a book it is. But anyway, that's not what I meant to say here. What I meant was: I saw a dress in a color they called "grape wreath." And it was, it was that oddly purply brown-grey that you get from dried grapevine twined into wreaths. But initially I misread it as "grape wrath."

That would be so great! They could go one of two ways with that. They could either do the Steinbeck line of children's clothing colors (grape wrath, rosasharn, pony red, pearl, mousy manly grey, cup gold, burning bright orange, travels with chartreuse) or the Harryhausen/giant monster line (grape wrath, godzilla green, mottled mothra, burnt charcoal, city-stomping red). I don't actually like Steinbeck, but for color names he's much better than for actual prose.

No? Well, I liked it.

I agree - Steinbeck is much better for color names than he is for actual prose.

I used to have a dress that was city-stomping red.

As should we all, really. Well. Those of us who have dresses.

The thing about 4-year-olds is that they are people, and thinking of them as people is important. A lot of people like Legos and books; is our niecelet one of those people? Why yes. Yes she is. And so.

Giving clothes to a four-year-old is a lovely gift for a parent!

(Actually, Violet loves getting clothes because she LOVES CLOTHES, and I love it because (a) less shopping for me and (b) presents from other people are more likely to be worn without a fight. Now that I've written it down, yes, I do see the connection there! If she didn't care I might not either.)

I always forget to list books as presents because it goes without saying.

Well, and the said elder niecelet seemed to really really dig her Christmas present, which was red and twirled. It was, in fact, a dress specifically sold on the premise that it would twirl. And Amber made darn sure she field-tested that premise. (But that was only part of her Christmas present, because with the exception of my godfathers, relatives who got me only clothes for holidays were not fully appreciated until I was at least 12 and possibly older.)

I would wear anything in the Harryhausen line.

You would look smashing (yes, I thought of it and wrote it anyway) in blown-up blue.

"Travels with chartreuse" sounds very much like something OPI would use for a nail polish color.

My daughter- who usually wore pants of some kind- ADORED "Twirling skirts" at that age. Some chiffon on a hunk of elastic would be perfect.

I think it's brilliant, but should be marketed to the highly literate. Perhaps start selling the Steinbeck line in Northern California.

Maybe they *should* put you in charge of marketing. Said almost-four-year-old would love the monster colors. And we did make sure to get her a short sleeve twirl dress too.
