The Red Wings / Coyotes game right now is riveting.

I'm cheering for both of them. Because, really, how can you not?

Oh, I could not.

I am, despite my fondness for a few people on my friendslist and despite the number of Swedish players they've had, anti-Wings nearly the way I'm anti-Yankees. And I have grave difficulties cheering for any team from south of the snow line. So I'm afraid I'm expecting to cheer against the victor eventually. Or at least hoping I'll have the chance. So many of my teams were completely out of the playoffs this year, alas.

I currently live just outside DC, and The Girl is a die-hard Caps fan.

...thankfully, I was born in Detroit and still have enough family there that I'm back often, and I split my childhood between there and Chicago. So I still have teams alive.

Montreal: from the heart of Hell I stab at thee. May you all become ill from bad poutine!

See, this is the thing: one of my friends who isn't any kind of sports fan thought that sports fans all had the formulation, "[my team] rooolz, [any other team] droooolz!", more or less. And that's just not so. The cheering protocols are complex and intricate.

I like Montreal and poutine (in moderation, in the latter case). And not falling completely apart on the power play would have helped the Caps' case for advancing to the next round, I tell you what.

I like both the Pens and the Habs, so I don't know what to hope for there. The Flyers are Dead To Me, so go Bruins. Chicago all the way, of course--Chicago is one of the teams I will sometimes cheer actively for, but "whoever is playing the Canucks" is always a favorite in this house. And go Sharks go, even though they're farther south than there ought to be hockey.

Okay, secret confession time: I was born 200 miles up the road, in Oilers territory. I kept my allegiance until I had spent as much time down here as I had there, and then decided it was no longer safe. Still cheer for them unless it's the Battle of Alberta, though.

But even that doesn't justify Canucks fans.

I cheer for the Oilers secondarily. I have a fictional character who plays for them, so I have to cheer for them. But not against my Wild.

But I have a fictional character who plays for the Oilers in part on purpose: Bobby Laird would not be the same guy if he played for the Canucks.

I grew up in a house full of Wings fans. I got over it.
