mrissa: (question)
[personal profile] mrissa
I send Christmas cards. Lots and lots of Christmas cards. I like Christmas cards. If you would like a Christmas card, please leave me your address here or send it to mris at-sign marissalingen dot com. Please let me know if you'd like to send me one as well, and I will send you my address. (In this, as in all things, I do not require strict reciprocity agreements. You may receive without sending or vice versa.)

Also, please let me know if "merry Christmas" is an inappropriate greeting for you for whatever reason. When I wish people a merry Christmas, I do not assume that they have an abiding and orthodox faith in Jesus Christ, or should have. Christmas started out a pagan holiday and certainly has a large secular component (which I also celebrate and find reasonable -- you don't get to thief someone else's religious holidays and symbolism and then grumble that people are doing what they want to with the stuff you already stole). But if it will make you cringe instead of smiling if I wish you a merry Christmas, please let me know what else you intend to celebrate, and I will adjust accordingly. The goal is to make you smile with something pleasant and celebratory in the mail, not to beat you about the head with the baby Jesus. I don't think he would have enjoyed that, and neither you nor I will, so I think it can be disposed of entirely.

I have obviously seen Biloxi Blues too many times. My initial response was to ask you to wish me a merry Mahalaguenya.

There's a radio commercial here that wishes people a happy ChrismaHanaKwanzaa. It's a fun word.

Oh, I went one better and referred to the commercial holiday of Hollowthankmastine's Day. [livejournal.com profile] markgritter and [livejournal.com profile] timprov decided that Chollo Thankmastein was the person who left presents under Hanukkah bushes.

I tend to use the generic "Happy Holidays" since it incorporates all the holidays. There's also the bland, "Season's Greetings" or the more serious "Peace, Love, and Hope".

There's also greetings like "Hope your days are toasty" or "Have a blizzard good time" or "Raise a glass for me" or some other saying appropriate to the occassion/person.

Let us exchange addresses on the weekend.

We're Not Much for overtly Christian messages.

I don't think I've seen Biloxi Blues at all. Recommended?

I like it. It's a Neil Simon play, so if you don't like his stuff, I would avoid it, of course. Matthew Broderick and Christopher Walken have a great screen dynamic.

I celebrate getting cookies in the mail.

I wish I were better at sending cards. :(

Cookies don't ship well. What you want in the mail is truffles.

[livejournal.com profile] mmerriam and I would love to exchange holiday greetings with you. Do you still have our home address? If not I'll resend. And feel free to send yours. (careswenATmnDOTrrDOTcom)

And much as I love being beaten about the head with Baby Jesus ::chuckle::, your sensitivity is appreciated. Thanks to that wonderful religious theft you mentioned, our faiths share the celebration of the birth of the Divine Child, so the imagery isn't lost on me. But a simple "Happy Holidays" is welcome, or "Merry Yule" or "Blessed Solstice" is also nice.

Well, I am Jewish, but I get Christmas cards from my relatives and I don't mind much.

Usually because they're light on the Jesus stuff.

So, it's up to you!

No, it's not up to me. I'm not going to psychically acquire your address. If you want me to send you a card, send me your address, and if you don't particularly, don't. It's no big deal to me, either way, but it's also not a choice I can make for you.

Ah, sorry, that's not quite what I meant. I wasn't being very clear. "Up to you" meant "send whatever you wish".

It's a shame you can't psychicially acquire stuff, though. That would be rather cool.

I got your address but did not manage to get mine to you so far this weekend. Shall I e-mail it, or will you look for it on the return address of the card I send you? (I send early.)
