Don’t Read What You’re An Expert In - 1:00PM Saturday - Veranda 5 /6
"How can this character be an expert on Chinese calligraphy when he doesn't even know how to pronounce 'Qing'?" Fiction on topics we know a lot about can be cringeworthy. In the extreme, glaring errors can ruin an otherwise good work. What topics set off our expertise alarms, when do we just suck it up and what (beyond infinite research) can authors do to avoid these problems?

I don't know what I'll be reading yet. Requests, either of specific stories or of categories/types of story, will be considered.

Careful examination of the programming whatsit will indicate that I am also on a CS Lewis panel on Saturday, but I've just written to programming about that; since things got shuffled around to make it all work out, it ended up in too close a proximity to my other panels for me to be able to handle it with my current state of health, so I won't be doing that one. Hope it goes well, though. (Also kind of makes me want to discuss it with the people on the Invisible Disability panel--and simultaneously makes me want to clam up and discuss nothing in that regard. Ah, tight-jawed Scando impulses.)

Hmm. I, on the other hand, don't have a panel right next to the CS Lewis panel, and seem to have overlooked that one when I was volunteering for panels, so I've just emailed Programming to offer in case they need someone to fill your spot on it.

I understand the contradictory impulses. :(

I'm intrigued by the titles of both "The Witch's Second" and "The Witch's Second Daughter," so either of those happily gets a vote from me. I loves me some witch stories.

And/or some more Carter Hall, because we always love him. Even though it reminds me every time that I *still* need to read Tam Lin.

Personally, I cringe when an author does something really stupid about metalworking. I ask myself "WHY did they not run this by a convenient and interested metalsmith, and avoid the worst problems?" I say this particularly because I am myself such a metalsmith, and would be more than happy to do that for authors, since I am a fanatic reader!

I am not a professional in textiles, but when authors- and more than one would suppose- confuse knitting, quilting, and crochet (and maybe spinning and/or weaving), I do get annoyed.

It is fortunate that most authors are not stupid about cooking, though that's mostly because they don't write about it at all.
