The advantage of writing urban fantasy or world-crossing fantasy is that when the sea serpent has eyes the color of NyQuil, you can say so rather than spending time trying to come up with settlement-era Icelandic-ish equivalent having something to do with moss-troll ichor. Because then you're stuck with moss-trolls, and also they have ichor, and you can pretty well guarantee that's going to come back and bite you in the butt in another book or two: you didn't have to deal with moss-trolls before, and now you do, and it's a lot of bother just for a color analogy.

The niflnissen were bad enough. Although the moss-trolls at least do not evaporate when they have finished their butt-biting, so that's something.

*gr* they just put existing words together. (Kidding kidding) Ben and I were joking about german this weekend.

I've lost track of the language but Ben used to say (this would be Ben the larger) that there was dislike of alternate world (other lang) words. So, the issue would be nyquil existing rather than old or modern.. I think. Or not really. I ahven't had enough coffee to think yet.

(Nyquil looks like it should have been born between the pages of a book.)

Don't you have to specify which flavor of NyQuil? It comes in different colors, which really annoys the sea serpent with coughing and runny nose.

I looked at Byerly's this morning after you said that, and I only saw the NyQuil of Shining Green Ghastliness. DayQuil comes in orange, but that's different, and Robitussin comes in all kinds of colors. Maybe a more fully-stocked pharmacy would have more colors of NyQuil, but I've never seen them. Even the generic NyQuil imitators are the same ghastly green.

There's also cherry-flavored red NyQuil. It's a little less vile tasting than the green.

Stupid Vicks have changed the formula of NyQuil to take out the pseudoephedrine (Why?? You can't make meth out of the liquid form anyway!!), making it less effective. But the Walgreens and Cub generic forms still have the old formula, in case you or anyone else is interested.

A quick Google search got me to the NyQuill site (http://vicks.com/products/nyquil_cough.shtml) which, presumably, lists all the variations currently being marketed (2). I've never actually taken moss-troll ichor myself.

The problem with it is when it doesn't work, it still knocks me on my butt, so then I'm coughing my lungs out and being forced to swim back up to consciousness for every cough. Which is not pleasant.

Happily I am years from the most recent example of that. Still.

There should be a word for that feeling. There really should.

Although I shall now shorthand it forever more as The Moss-Troll Problem.

I'm afraid my pre-coffee brain went like this: strongly coloured patent medicine -- Pepto-Bismol -- very pink, which was an interesting image for a moment. Oddly enough, even though I've never seen a moss-troll, that got me a much more likely shade of green.
