A dozen different things at once
Jun. 4th, 2006 06:18 pmThe proper response to a false dichotomy is to either ignore it or to challenge it directly, not to buy into it. If someone says to you, "Mind or body?" you should not spend your time trying to decide which is better. If someone says to you, "Black or white?", you are allowed to say, "Both, please, and also grey, green, blue, purple, red, brown, and orange with little gold sparklies in it."
If you are now thinking, "I know which one topic she means here!", you are now wrong. Because false dichotomies are the bane of my last month or so. I wish I was talking about just one. Or just two. Or just five. In fact, in general, if I don't name you, I don't mean you-and-just-you. In most cases, I don't mean you at all.
