[Poll #795030]

Please note that, as always, this is not a democracy. I am curious, not using this poll as a definitive life-decision-maker.

I am still dithering, but I looked at my credit card bill last night and I think...no WFC for me.

But I reserve the right to tick the first box, should I change my mind!

Well, and you are the Hannah. Come Visit *You* Con is fairly high on the list of Come Visit *Somebody* Cons, given that you are you and the people around you are also them.

I'm on the fence about Austin myself. On the one hand, it's a lot of travel and I've used up way too much personal time lately (with more coming out for Worldcon). On the other hand, bats under bridges! (http://www.batcon.org/home/index.asp?idPage=122)

That's me.

Boskone! or Readercon! or Bothcon! These also qualify as ComeVisitVariousBostonFolksCon.

I would advise that both those cons are not the optimal VistBoston seasons. Even Minneapolis is unlikely to think of Boston in Feb as a 'vacation' from a Minnesota winter. If I were to have a vote in the MrisCon site selection, I would vote for an actual spring or fall/early winter date.

I'll grant that with the Boskone venue change, it's no longer possible to just spend the entire weekend inside the Back Bay Arcology Sheraton/Prudential Center/Copley Place/Westin connected complex.

OTOH, July isn't a terrible time to visit Boston, even if Bur(b)lington is as boring as it is.

Also, if [livejournal.com profile] natalieann can suggest conventions that coincide with her birthday weekend, why can't I? Readercon it is, then.

Well, but it's not *just* for a con, or else it wouldn't matter when it was, for hotels are always the same, except for the view. It's for a suggested Visit as well, which means she would have to brave the weather as well as the hotel.

And July is a dismal time to visit anywhere. (Well, anywhere on the top of the world. It's probably a good time to visit the bottom of the world or anywhere with snow.)

[livejournal.com profile] timprov was asking me where it's nice in August. He suggested packing up the household and going to Iceland for Augusts. I can't say it was entirely lacking in appeal.

I read that Greenland's icecap is melting off faster than it has since they've been measuring that sort of thing. Perhaps you could option some of the soon-to-be-available ground for a summer home? Though there's less geothermal goodness in greenland. and all those unemplyed giants.

Last I read, it was growing back again faster than it had melted? Strong variations over a 7-year period or some such, pretty weird.

Could very well be. The thing I read was a bit fnord-ridden about environmental changes and the dangers of global warming. "Ack! coastal cities will flood! thousands will flee inland!" --or they'll, y'know, build dykes or municipal water-ways and get on with life. Accurate enough for whimsey though.

It's not well-organized enough to be an arcology. Retail-oriented cave system, perhaps.

Bigdale, on the other hand, is a sinister corporate arcology waiting to happen.

I wrote about this at length in my sophomore creative writing journal and scared my prof considerably.

it lacks integrated houseing for the workers. Unless one counts the tribes of the car-less.

If I were [livejournal.com profile] mrissa, aside from behing horribly confused about where my beard had gone, I would not go to a con in Austin until I had more proof that the Falling Over in a Horrible Flopping Floppiness problem was gone for good, because being sick and floppy in Texas = teh suxx0r.

You should come to my Farthing launch party in September, which is going to be like a con.

And you shouldn't go to World Fantasy because World Fantasies are full of writers and wannabes and people networking, and they are not full of fans and people talking about books, so they cost twice as much as a normal con and are only half as much fun, in my opinion.

Date: 2006-08-15 11:07 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
I would love to come to Montreal for your launch party. I'm pretty sure we won't be able to make the timing work that soon with Mark's travel and other obligations, but I will look and see. ([livejournal.com profile] timprov says, "If not, she'll just have to write more books," but I know that having a launch party of that size is a non-trivial endeavor, so while I do want you to write more books, I don't even want to hint that you're obligated for more party hosting.)

I want to go to WhyIsAllTheRumCon! It would be awesome! Though hanging out with distraut pirates is perhaps not the best way to spend a weekend. :-/ Instead I am considering boardgamegeek.con, also in the great state of Tejas. In November.

From: [identity profile] greykev.livejournal.com
Now we just need to convince publishers and fans that a piratical-themed con is economically feasible, and for Disney to support the use of their catch-phrase in such a manner.

I'm thinking grass-roots viral marketing. Or just declaring some pre-existing con to be WhyIsAllTheRumCon! ala world fantasy's con hopping technique, and going the smartmob route.

I could seriously see something like this developing a following.

Was't that a world fantasy con name a while back? Still, as pirates attendees would be perfectly entitled to steal the name of another con, and bucconeer would be hard to resist.
