Got some bad family news just now. Nothing about me directly, but it's one of my moderately close family members. Waiting for more details on some parts of it. Feeling helpless and upset and not entirely rational on this subject.

So! Tell me something good. Here, I'll go first:

1) We still have fresh tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes are good.
2) The brownies are almost done baking. That's three good things in one: brownie batter, the smell of brownies baking, and then of course the brownies themselves.
3) The dog is scruffing her head into a blanket with her butt in the air, looking sideways at me to see if I am cheered up by her cuteness or whether she needs to break out the big guns (licking the backs of my knees, then chasing her tail; repeat until monkey breaks down and laughs).
4) My standard "living in the future" stuff: contact lenses, birth control, dishwashers, fancy word processors, internet. Hot tub. Etc.
5) I have my energy back again, which is useful for all sorts of things.

Please?

Sunday morning, we had three distinctly overripe bananas. But then [livejournal.com profile] tiger_spot came over, and we went out and got eggs and sour cream and pecans, and mixed things together and put them in the oven, and now I have buckwheat banana bread, just like my mother used to make. It is very yummy, and good for breakfast.

And [livejournal.com profile] tiger_spot liked it very much too.

After worrying about ending up alone when my long relationship ended, I seem to be practically besieged with suitors - started two long-distance relationships (I'm poly, of course, for the onlookers), and am in exciting contact with a local woman who's very interested in me, as well as for the first time in my life having to say 'no' to someone who was interested in me...:)

We have sunshine, we have warm (neither to be taken for granted in Maine in September). We have a new great blue heron on the bike ride, replacing the late lamented bird seen dead in a ditch.

And the Red Sox won a game last night, surely worth of note.

From Wikipedia

Theme song

The show used a rollicking theme song sung by a bunch of barflies. The tune and lyrics are based on the Marines' hymn.

In eighteen-hundred-one the Revolution had been won
And Uncle Sam’s favorite son had a job he needed done
Which brought Jack to a lady, both beautiful and smart
Who found his mix intriguing—a scoundrel with a heart!

From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli
There was never a leatherneck braver, a Daring Dragoon is he
He’ll halt the bold advance of Napoleon’s attack
There ain’t a French or pirate rogue who don’t know Jack!

From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli
Sailin’ round the bloody world to defend democracy
And when ya need a fightin’ man ya’d trust to watch yer back
Just ask the bloke right next ta ya—it’s… Jack!

Amber has started talking to us now, using more sounds and more volume control. Now when she babbles, it's starting to sound like actual talking, rather than just "aaah" "gaah" "thhbbbbpttt (bubbles)". I distinctly heard "dadadada" when I was feeding her yesterday and later in the day, Jeff was trying to get her to do it again by saying "da da da da da", and she repeated it exactly!

This weekend she also stuck her feet in the water of Lake Michigan and in the sand on the beach. Well, had them stuck into the water/sand by dad. But she enjoyed it. There was much sqealing and kicking.

Oh, yeah and she's kicking like crazy, everytime someone picks her up.

2. It's autumn (at least here in MN).

3. I just had a local apple which was so good I darn near cried.

4. Today, Éiden toddled over to where Arie was lying on the couch, sighed, and rested his curly little head on Arie's chest. Arie hugged him gently. This is rare indeed.

Grokking a whole new level of emergent properties and complex interactions in Civ 2, now that I am on my third game thereof.

Imminent Farthing party with lots of associated proximity of cool and well-liked people.

[livejournal.com profile] stakebait, who unfortunately cannot make said party, visiting the following week.

Curtains on the kitchen windows. No more having to remember a dressing gown every time one gets out of bed for a drink.

Seeing Little Miss Sunshine last night. Absolutely wonderful film, which I shall hopefully get around to reviewing later today or tomorrow.

Going to see Raoul Bhaneeja's solo Hamlet tonight. Preceded by cheeseburgers with avocado, and fries with garlic mayo, at the local Belgian friterie mini-chain.

The imminent going away of some major worries, resolution of some major uncertainties, and general relaxation of what has been a very stressful few months altogether.

1) It is peaches season in Ontario. One gets a basket of slightly hard peaches for five bucks at the store, leaves it on the counter for a few days, by which time it has turned into 12-18 doses of sweet juicy peachy heaven. I'm going to eat them until I get sick today.

I am sorry you are dealing with bad news. My offering is:

I got mail from England today.

The contents are also of the good, being payment for a story, but the important part is that I got MAIL from ENGLAND. With the airmail sticker and lovely stamp and a little message from Royal Mail telling me that From 21st August postage prices will be based on SIZE and WEIGHT.

I cannot explain why this makes me so utterly and irrationally happy, but it truly truly does.

Maybe because it's proof that England really exists?

My blood pressure dropped so much that I cut one medication in half. It's still low enough that I will probably stop relying on the last analysis of the situation and go see the doctor about cutting another med. I know this would be alarming for many people, but for me it just means that you-know-who did not lay off you-know-whom, which removes a huge stressor that has been present in one form or another since 2000.

Also, I just realized that I'd written two chapters while thinking I was only writing one. A little tinkering, and voila! I'm much further on than I thought. Whee.

1. From my office I can go down the hall, push a button, and get various kinds of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. As the weather has started to run cold, this is a definite feature.
2. Living in the Future I: I have a library request waiting for me. Requested online; notified by email.
3. [livejournal.com profile] hr_macgirl and I went on an IKEA trip yesterday. Despite OMGtraffic (as in "the highway exit was backed up all the way to the end of the ramp") it wasn't too crazy and we got a nice set of shelves, which have been assembled and await only some re-arranging so they can go where they will be living.
4. Lots of good books on the to-be-read stack; I will not lack for good reading for some time.
