My brain has helpfully provided me with insights into plot, character, setting, and theme for three other novels this morning, in an attempt to not work on Sampo.

Golly. Thanks, brain.

I jot them down in short form, close the file again, and go back to Sampo.

Still, I've written six new pages of Sampo so far. I am mighty; I prevail.

I had a wonderful bitchy rant from my On the Wire POV character turn up last night, about "women's magazines the size of small telephone directories with fifty pages of fashion ads before the contents, which then cunningly leave out the biggest things mentioned on the cover so you can't actually find whatever it was that caught your eye in the first place." Only trouble is, I'm not sure anyone she's likely to hang out with is liable to have that kind of a magazine lying around.

I think she's the one with two goldfish called Yossarian and McMurphy, though.

Sometimes stuff like that happens early on so you can see who else needs to be around there to make the rant possible.

Other times not.

But the godpox, for example -- like cowpox! -- that was definitely a directional sort of rant.

GODPOX.

I don't want any context. I'm happier this way.

The way where you avoid catching godpox? True, you're much happier this way.

I hate it when that happens. It's why I despise long drives. And now I'm making at least one per week and interviewing for a job where I'd make five more. Le sigh...

When I was driving back and forth to Davis for grad school (one hour each way), I bought a mini-cassette recorder for those circumstances, so I could just dictate ideas etc. into the recorder rather than having to either pull over or remember them.

Our car got broken into and it was stolen, but the idea is still sound.

They weren't deserted on the way to Davis, sadly, so I had to pay some minimal attention to the road. Very sad.

This is why I have so many story ideas: because I am the kind of procrastinator who procrastinates by doing other useful things. "Where do you find time for baking?" people say. "Your house looks so clean!" people say. "You write so many short stories!" people say.
