These aren't the brownies I intended to make. But then the top wouldn't come off the vanilla extract, no matter how I twisted and swore and started flaking bits of rubber off the jar-opener. So I put in almond extract instead, and smelled it. There was a hole in the smell. The hole was the shape of cherries. So I put in some dried cherries, and we will hope for the best.

What bits of your life are improvised lately?

All of it. :) I make it all up as I go along.

As much of it as I can manage while still maintaining something resembling a structured life.

Well, I was going to take the guinea pig outside and let her graze on grass while I cleaned her cage.

It is, however, raining. Therefore, no grazing.

The wee beast has been running around the backyard like a mad thing and comes in smelling of the last of the leaves and of the first of winter and of chilled fur. We are happy it's not raining, but I do wish she would stop leaving her jacket outside.

I know exactly what you mean, and what a wonderful way of describing it. :)

Thanks.

Sometimes I wonder about how other people cook, and then I get confused.

Well, I aspire to that kind of cooking (though more with taste than with smell, but they're close to each other). I usually can't name the shape of the hole.

There was a hole in the smell. The hole was the shape of cherries.

This is totally how I usually cook.

Brandy is also a good substitute for vanilla. Personally I use betterscotch schnapps in brownies- especially with butterscotch chips thrown in.

We have butterscotch schnapps in the cabinet for use in hot cocoa in the winter, but I am not partial to butterscotch chips -- not sure why.

Next time I should poke my head into the liquor cabinet and see what whispers, "Brownies!" at me, though.

dried quince, cranberries and toasted pecans are in this batch of my brownies... Ah, forgot to add the Mt Gay rum too.

My dinner, because I forgot to turn down the heat under the porkchops before I left for work. :( to the now-pulled-pork I've added some tomato paste, we'll see what else it needs once the water has cooked away.

Childrearing and sex, mainly. The other parts have a way of making routines for themselves (both good and bad).

My style of comments for grading papers, and the arrangement of books on my shelves (since I've just unpacked some boxes).

All of last Friday. And bits of the rest of the weekend. But precious little of the upcoming week.
