mrissa: (question)
[personal profile] mrissa
I had beef and spinach for dinner, and I'm pondering what kind of raisin-laden breakfast I ought to eat. If you don't know what that means, you've probably never been anemic. Anemic-dizzies are fairly distinguishable from other kinds of dizzies, at least from here. (I would be less of a connoisseur, if I had the option.) They are at least easing off today, compared to last night. I got to alternate between rushing about in a frenzy of activity and sitting looking peaked and wan. Alternating is better than all wan, all the time.

Anyway, that's a chunk of my week so far, and the rest is in the broad but satisfactory category of seeing people and/or doing stuff. I'm in one of my periodic moods of weird reticence, I think due to sorting out what I'm doing here (next book, I mean). So I'm going to do one of those question memes, this one thiefed from [livejournal.com profile] fairmer:

1. Where were you 1 hour ago? In the laundry room, sorting laundry.

2. When is the last time you filled up your gas tank? Monday afternoon.

3. What is the most amount of money you spent in one store? I could look up how much the hot tub set us back this summer. It was a good sale, but on the other hand, it's a 7' square hot tub.

4. Is there anything pink within 10 feet of you? Yes. A pen, some notecards, a few carbon copies of things in the "to be filed" folder, the envelope for my godfather Joe's birthday card, and half of Frank. Frank is my stuffed fish, the oldest of my monitor-top animals. He shares space with a blue dragon, a lighter blue sea serpent finger puppet, and a penguin. All the Gritter sibs and sibs-in-law at the time got penguins that year for Christmas; that was before Jeff, much less Donna, so it was fewer penguins total.

5. When is the last time you went to the mall? Err. We were in an open-air mallish thing in Austin for World Fantasy: we went to lunch, and we found [livejournal.com profile] raecarson a sweater, and I want to say that [livejournal.com profile] sosostris2012 got lip balm. And we found a dress we suspect we were all three too boobular to wear. It was shiny. Probably we should designate someone to go try it on anyway just to make sure, at a local version of that store.

6. Are you wearing socks right now? No.

7. Do you have a car worth over $5,000? I have no idea what our car is worth right now. I suspect not -- it's a Saturn from '99, so while it is a perfectly adequate car for our current needs, it's probably not going to fetch much on the resale market.

8. When was the last time you drove out of town? Out of Eagan? About 1:30. Out of the greater Twin Cities metropolitan area? October twenty-mumble, for Jim's wedding.

9. Have you been to the movies in the last 5 days? Heh. No. [livejournal.com profile] markgritter boycotted the MPAA for awhile when we were first married. He got tired of it and stopped after awhile, but by then we had gotten out of the habit of going. Now we only go if there's a particular reason. Which there is -- Christopher Guest movie! also "The Prestige," even though we'll be the last people on lj to see it -- but we just haven't gotten around to it. Getting out of the habit is actually much more effective than an active boycott. In high school [livejournal.com profile] scottjames and I and our friends went to the movies a lot; even in the summers during college, with [livejournal.com profile] greykev, when I was home. And I remember going more than once with [livejournal.com profile] steve_dash_o the college summer we were in the same research program. But since then, not very much.

10. Are you popular? In this room at the moment, very popular: the dog adores me, and there's no one else here. The world at large has not heard of me, on the average. Scales between are, well, scaled between.

11. What was the last thing you had to drink? I have a just-now-empty glass of water on my desk. I finished it while answering #8.

12. What was the last thing you mailed in the mail? As opposed to mailing in the tree? My aunt's birthday card.

13. Do you wash your car? This is why gas stations come with car washes attached.

14. Last fast food you ate? Fast food. Um. Probably a Panera sandwich, but I don't remember quite when. Unless take-and-bake pizza counts.

15. Where were you last week at this time? The calendar seems to indicate that I was home, but you know how calendars get.

16. Have you bought any clothing items in the last week? Nope, but I will probably buy one soon, as a Christmas present. I have a coupon for an online store.

17. What bank do you use? That one over there. It's very convenient. You know, the one with my accounts in it.

18. Do you own any land? Together with [livejournal.com profile] markgritter and the unspecified bank, yes. This house is on about a third of an acre. There are trees. It is good.

19. What do you want to be when you "grow up?" I am as grown up as I am likely to get in this regard, so you're just going to have to cope.

20. Your dream vacation? I don't have -- or want -- one single dream vacation. It's adjusted to circumstance. If [livejournal.com profile] timprov felt good enough to take [livejournal.com profile] markgritter and me to see his friends and favorite bits in Hungary, that'd be awesome. But my mom was talking about taking my grands to Vancouver -- not overly exotic but sounds good to me. I could go lots of places. Just not right now.

21. Last boat ride you went on? Boat ride? It can't be the one to Angel Island with Amber (the college friend Amber, not the niece Amber -- the one who's named after the books and not after her parents liking the name) before we left the Bay Area, August of '03, and yet I'm drawing a blank on what else it would have been. Edit: Down the Thames July '05? I think probably.

22. How old are your parents? Mom is 52, Dad is 53. If you feel the urge to comment on your own or anyone else's extreme age after reading this, please rest assured I've already thought of it and am kind of bored by the subject, unless it's made entertaining, as with Ctein, who is nearly three decades my senior, assuming that we were roughly the same age. That was funny.

23. Are you in love? Ayep.

24. Do you have any single friends? Yes, by multiple definitions.

25. Last play you saw? If operetta counts, the GSVLOC production of "Princess Ida" when the niece version of Amber was born. If not, the Somerset Maugham thing we saw last fall.

26. Have you been to New York? Yes, and it wasn't 1927 any more. Someday I will get over this. There are drawbacks to letting a child gorge herself on Edna St. Vincent Millay at very young age. Of course, there are also advantages.

27. What are your plans for tonight? From here on out? Remain upright at least half an hour longer. The rest is gravy. It may be gravy that involves a quick basic-level tidy of the office, reading, writing e-mail. But it will be gravy.

28. Last concert you went to? BNL on Sunday night. Good stuff.

30. Ever go to camp or been camping? Yes and yes. I am not a camping person. I am even more not a camp person, because camp is like camping but with Group Activities.

31. Were you an honor roll student in school? Ha, oh yes. Very much so. They still had something I wanted.

32. What is your current GPA? Currently, "GPA" is my abbreviation for anything written down to do with my grandfather. "Ask Gpa books" and "lend Gpa Arlo," for example. [livejournal.com profile] markgritter's grandfathers get one more letter each, so "write to GpaL" is on my list for Sunday.

33. Are you wearing any perfume or cologne? No, but I wear stinky lotion.

34. Are you hungry? Not at all. Beef and spinach sustain me, and the person with whom I was doing the thing this afternoon bought a round of gelato.

35. Where is your best friend located? Total Orderings Bad. There are several people I will refer to as "my best friend" when I'm talking to people who don't know me very well, because specifying "my friend who is best in the following regards" is clunky and not something they care about anyway.

36. Do you own a cowboy hat? No. Knowing me and hats, it'd probably be adorable. But adorable is not my goal here.

37. Do you have a tan? Do I even need to write out the gales of laughter, people? I am not so pale that I can be guaranteed that I will be the palest person in the MSP airport at any given time, but I am pale enough that other residents of the greater Twin Cities metro area notice it. Even my freckles are pale.

38. How old do you want to be when you have kids? Checking the calendar, probably not 28.

39. Do you collect anything? In some circumstances, I tell people I collect books, but this is usually when I'm talking to the people who can't tell the difference between collecting books and owning a metric buttload of books. I have recently announced to my grandmother that if she was to buy me fountain pens, I would not take it amiss. But I only have two right now.

40. Is this quiz annoying? Meh. If it was too annoying, I'd quit.

41. Last time you got pulled over? Never have. I am just that virtuous.

42. Ever been arrested? See above re: virtue.

43. Been to Mexico for Spring Break? No, and it is not a universe in which I anticipate that ever happening. Fine by me.

44. Do you like hot sauce? Not really. I like flavorful sauces, including some that are hot, but that's not really the same thing.

45. Last time you had sex? I understand that some people feel that reporting their sexual encounters to their lj is a good idea. However, this is the sort of thing where in person I would lean in, smile sweetly and say, "In Minnesota, we have an expression for this sort of thing." And then I would wait for the quizzical look, and then I would say, "None of your damn business."

46. Do you need to do laundry? You remember the gales of laughter I didn't write out for #37? They apply here as well. The laundry monster is ever vigilant, and so need I be.

47. How many friends do you have? Well, there's you, and then that other guy, and beyond that let's just say "some."

48. Are you someone's best friend? In similar fashion to the way they're mine, probably. Total orderings eschewed by all.

49. Are you rich? Yep. House has not just indoor plumbing but hot tub. We can afford for me to bash my head repeatedly at this particular fiction-writing wall without anybody losing a roof over his/her head. I wanted strawberries this weekend, very far out of season, and I didn't have to do any math to determine that we could afford strawberries. Rich.

Also we have rich interior lives and so on, but this is one of those times where the crass question deserves an equally crass answer. More Americans should face up to the fact that they are fairly rich compared to their immediate neighbors and unimaginably rich compared to the rest of the world.

50. What are you thinking right this minute? Well, one track of my brain is playing Indigo Girls' "Point Hope," and another is thinking of how much more Buy Nothing Day makes sense to me when I've read someone talking about how their partner will be asked to spend Thanksgiving night in the store so as to be available to open at 5 a.m. And another is worrying at the Which Book question, and another is trying to gauge whether I can do anything more useful before going to bed. And another is thinking of what to order from the local library's card catalog, and another is fussing about the lack of footnotes or endnotes in the library book I'm reading right now. And another is trying to figure out whether there'll be time to make hazelnut apple bread in the morning, and another is fussing about a friend who's handling a difficult situation admirably well.

Yes, I have an eight-track mind.

you should have figs with raisins. or, um, something.

because figs also are high in iron. at least that's what my sister who is anemic tells me.

Oh, yah, for sure. I just thought there might be some taste treat I was missing.

It is so nice to see someone else describe multiple-track mind in a way with which I am quite familiar.

This is probably one of the few memes I've ever actually read through, but I find you interesting and figured any meme by you I at least wouldn't be sorry I'd taken time to read. Nice to be right!

Why, thank you!

I don't do memes that don't require -- or at least allow -- substantial amounts of writing from me. It's all mildly amusing to find out that my personality is best represented by a laser-guided unicorn or whatever, but it's not really my thing to post those.

Laser-guided unicorn, eh? Here I was all happy with a tap-dancing dragon...

I find that parsley does well for me. Not so much garnishes as just...lots of parsley. My friend and I used to make salads of which the green was chopped parsley. Yes, people looked at us strangely, but we liked it, and it was always good for a shot of iron.

My goodness. I can deal with parsley in some things, but generally I'd rather have some other green -- cilantro or spinach or something, depending on what sort of thing it is.

Spinach, definitely. I, however, belong to the 'cilantro tastes like mildewy basements' part of the population, so I will differ from you there.

raisins, nuts, spinach, insatiable desire for liversausage (even when I was attempting to be veg at the time - I was so low the docs MADE me)... yep... know those dizzies all too well!

The disgusting thing I crave when I'm running really anemic is the liquid iron supplement I had to take when I was too small to swallow pills. No one could possibly want that stuff for its own taste!

My iron deficit pointer is craving for ... rubber.

I have told repeatedly the story of chewing thorough first all the medicine chest rubber items and then the toys children had before I tried to sell blood and so found out I needed iron when I was breastfeeding.

And keeping my mind on the feelings rubber gives me WORKS as kind of litmus test - this summer I suddenly noticed rubber boots looking appetite inducing and as it happened right before some blood work done for another reason, I specifically asked to check the iron. Sure enough, it was hovering on the border of acceptable.

I crave leafy greens when the anemia hits. Fresh, crisp leafy greens. They don't have to have anything on them as long as they're not old or warm. :)

I know those dizzies well too. :D

It's good to have a litmus test like that, even though I hope you don't ever get to the point of boot-chewing!
