As [livejournal.com profile] timprov noted, we are okay here, and so are [livejournal.com profile] porphyrin's.

We drove across that bridge yesterday to go get Robin from daycare. We took him to see "Ratatouille." The bridge is not far from his daycare building. Not nearly far enough.

I am pretty shaken up here. But fundamentally okay.

I'm glad you're safe.

I don't understand why it would be better if his daycare were a bit further from the bridge. To me, far enough not to worry about getting hit is all that matters.

Well, it wasn't far enough not to worry about it getting hit, for one thing, and I'm not sure what kind of a mess there will be actually getting down to the daycare itself. One hopes it'll be fine. If it isn't, if they need some time to get things settled out around there, we'll have godkids in the house for a couple days if [livejournal.com profile] porphyrin needs us to. There are far worse fates, to be sure, but Robin is big enough that he will know approximately what's going on, and he's the sort of kid who may well be bothered.

I figured traffic would be screwed up around it for a few hours, but then I figure traffic will be screwed up over a lot of Mpls for months. (At least by Mpls standards.) If it's within a block of something fallen, repair stuff might get in the way for a while.

His daycare is 100 yards from the north end of the collapse.

Needless to say, it is currently closed due to asbestos concerns.

It would be better if his daycare were a bit further from the bridge. :)

I haven't seen anything about asbestos from the bridge. Was it there, or in the building?

Grateful that everyone I know there is okay doesn't come close to how I feel right now.

But oh, those poor people who were hurt or didn't make it and their families...

Eeep.

Thank you for posting to say you're okay. (And for being someone that I knew would do that, too. Assuming that you were okay, I mean. My immediate thought, upon seeing mention of this else-LiveJournal was "I shall go look for Mris's post to make sure she's okay.")

I hope the secondary effects end up being as untraumatic as possible under the circumstances, too.

I must say that a major drawback of those in-flight live TV setups is that you might hear about something like this and be several hours from being able to find out if people you know are okay.

Sending good thoughts toward the Twin Cities tonight.

Glad y'all are safe. It's always a little chill-inducing to realise sometimes how close we are to danger. (I had a similar feeling when the section of the freeway just off the Bay Bridge collapsed due to a truck crash. I had just driven it a few days before.)

Stay safe, you and yours.

Glad all Mris and Stella peeps are okay. A little freakish to find out you actually drove on the bridge yesterday, since my coping mechanism was basically, "What are the odds that anyone I know ever actually uses that bridge?" Still. *sighs big relief*

Date: 2007-08-02 05:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrissa.livejournal.com
Odds are quite excellent that everyone you know in Mpls who drives a car uses that bridge. Seriously. It's that big a deal. But what that means is that if you hear 50 cars were on it, odds are very good that no one you know was in them, because everyone uses that bridge.

This scared the bejeezus out of my mom. She walked in halfway through the story and didn't hear where exactly the bridge was and knew we were crossing the Mississippi that day. (We were in St. Louis)

Glad you're okay.
