Aeon just let me know they're buying "Swimming Back from Hell by Moonlight." Yaaaaay! Maybe we're not supposed to play favorites, but I can come right out and say I think this is one of my best. It's got girl-Orpheus, who is a picture book illustrator, and hell is in fact full of mice. And I wrote it partly for [livejournal.com profile] cristalia and partly for Andrew, and I like it when stories that are for people don't turn out too narrow to be for anyone else. (Although I think the ways in which it's for Leah are a great deal more sidelong than that.)

You know what this means, of course: I have sold more stories than I've written this year. Again. So I have to write another story. Wailie woe etc.

Wooohoo!

How long did they have it before accepting? I've been sharpening a poking stick for Aeon, but if they're cleaning out the subs maybe I'll wait before poking.

I sent it in May, and they asked to hold it in June. I queried them yesterday.

The mice are not particularly dead.

Wooo sale! Woo new Mrissa story!

The mice are not, as I just wrote to [livejournal.com profile] panjianlien, particularly dead. It's not their hell, any more than mice in a library are using it for a library. It's just that they happened to put a hell where the mice wanted to be, so, being mice, they shrugged and moved on with their mousely business.

so, when you and Leah put together a joint short collection, you can call it Of Mice and Bears (?)

and congrats:)

Or we can include reminiscences of [livejournal.com profile] matociquala and call it Of Mice and Bears, and Bear.

Funny, I never thought of calling Thermionic Night, Of Moose and Men.

Funny, I never thought of calling Thermionic Night, Of Moose and Men.

I'm a little disappointed in both of us.

But congratulations on the story sale! And don't forget: you don't have to figure out what book to write next.

I sat there thinking, "Hell, hell, hell. What do I know about hell?" And that's what came up: dark, deep, full of mice. Right then.

I confess a fondness for the mice.

Mine wound up on the Oregon coast instead, but the principle is sound.
