We went to the hospital this afternoon for awhile to see Robin and [livejournal.com profile] porphyrin and Mike. Turned out we got to see Lillian and [livejournal.com profile] porphyrin's middle sister and brother-in-law as well, because they were still there for part of our visit. We hung around and talked, some practicalities of the situation and some telling of the story of yesterday, but also some stories about college professors and other random subjects of interest.

I can't accurately reassure myself or others yet about the long-term prognosis for this eye; that's not information we have right now. We're just going to have to wait and see. What I do know is that Robin was quite reasonably slightly frustrated at having to stay in his hospital bed and in his hospital room, but was in reasonable enough spirits and could entertain himself with cookies and Legos and cartoons. He read most of the card my mom sent for him, only needing help on a few words, and he was all the grown-up in the world when the nurse went to take his temperature in his ear. "Actually," he explained to her, "the mouth works better for me."

He is a good kid. He is such a good kid. And while we don't know what shape the okayness is going to take yet, he's going to be okay one way or another. And he's doing pretty well right now, under the circumstances.

In the elevator, I turned to Robin's godfathers and said, "Well. Everybody feel better?" Everybody did.

Fwiw, a friend of ours lost one eye when he was a kid and is doing fine with one working eye and one artificial one. Not that losing an eye anything you *want* for someone you love....

Right, we'll hope that he doesn't have to lose the eye, but if he does, we'll know that his world will not be a small and barren one because of it.

Yesterday I said to the guys, "Well, he might end up with some limits on his vision. This is something he can deal with, and we can all deal with along with him. And if he grows up to be a man like [livejournal.com profile] mmerriam, we'll all be proud."

Ah, you say the sweetest things.

Thanks for updating us on Roo's condition, and hey, at least if he does have some limits to his vision, they'll be one adult around who's done it and can help him through.

Ah, you say the sweetest things.

Only when I mean them.

A friend of mine in grade school had a false eye. We used to joke about the mischief one could get into with a hand-painted eye-- especially because the eye-painter did a fun eye for kids. One kid had a skull and crossbones, one got his eye suspended from school, things like that.

Yay Robin. Sounds like he's handling it fabulously, all things considered.

I'm pretty positive that Robin is doing better than all the adults in his life, including me. I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm not usually that grown up when people want to take my temperature. Kudos to Robin.

I'm so glad to hear that things are going well so far, and I'm hoping for the best.

This is a good sort of news to have. Not that there might not be even better news to hope for. I adore the "The mouth works better for me" bit.

Good thoughts for Robin's healing.

And for the adults in his life having less stress.

Glad to hear he's in good spirits. Such scary stuff. Eye injuries freak me out bigtime (more so than any other kind of injury).

You always make him sound like such a great kid (and I'm sure he is). He's lucky to have such great family and friends around him.

North Memorial rocks, near as I can tell, based on the care my Grandpa K received there late in life, but also on the care he received before that. He had all manner of eye problems from middle-age on and had multiple surgeries and treatments there and elsewhere. Nothing but good things to say about North Memorial.

Yah, I am freaked out by eye stuff as well, and so are many of his other favorite grown-ups. I kept muttering, "He's too young to read Tim Powers novels."

I'm so glad to hear that about North Memorial.

Eeep. I'm glad he'll be OK: I'm also glad he has adults who have the concept of different shapes of okayness.
